Nigel Farage's party overturned Labour's massive majority in Runcorn and Helsby to win another seat in Parliament by just six votes. The party won hundreds of council seats across the country, crushing the Conservatives and taking control of several local authorities. This includes Lancashire County Council which was held by the Conservatives and considered a target for Labour until recently. Reform also won a seat at Rochdale council which had been held by a Labour MP following a by-election in Balderstone and Kirkholt. It comes just three weeks after the party won a council by-election in Tameisde, gaining its first councillor in Greater Manchester. Two Reform candidates have also been elected as the first mayors of the Greater Lincolnshire and Hull and East Yorkshire areas. The party leader said the elections mark 'the end of two-party politics' and the 'beginning of the end of the Conservative Party'. Speaking to newly-elected Reform councillors in Staffordshire later in the day, Mr Farage said: “I have been doing this game for about 30 years and in many ways what happened last night is without a doubt the most significant day in my political career. “It is a seismic change in British politics. It is of a proportion nobody could even have dreamt of. “We want our country back, we want to reestablish the right values around family, community and country.” Reform have taken control of Lancashire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Durham County councils. The party has also won control of Doncaster Council where Labour mayor Ros Jones clung on to her role by just 698 votes. Labour also narrowly won in North Tyneside and the West of England where Reform were a close second in the race for mayor. There were no local elections planned in Greater Manchester this year, making the Rochdale council by-election the only vote here. Thursday (May 1) also saw a parliamentary by-election take place in Runcorn and Helsby following the resignation of Wythenshawe-born Mike Amesbury who spent three nights in prison for punching a constituent before his sentence was suspended on appeal. The final result which saw Reform win by just six votes came after a dramatic night in which a full recount took place in the tight race. Prime Minister Keir Starmer conceded that losing the by-election in one of Labour's safest seats last year was 'disappointing'.
