Why Diwali Treats Are Becoming a Luxury: Dry Fruit Prices Skyrocket!

As the joyous festival of Diwali approaches, a shocking reality is hitting Indian households hard: the prices of essential dry fruits and nuts have soared to alarming heights, making them a luxury rather than a staple. The festive spirit is clashing with economic realities as consumers grapple with skyrocketing costs.
The reason behind this sudden price surge? Traders point fingers at not just a spike in festive demand but also the ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, two of India’s major suppliers of these sought-after goods. This geopolitical strife has disrupted imports and left consumers feeling the pinch.
Recent reports reveal that cashews, which used to be a staple for many during the festival, have seen a jaw-dropping increase in wholesale prices—up by Rs 100 per kg within a month! They’ve climbed from Rs 730 to Rs 830 per kg, and retail prices are now hitting between Rs 900 and Rs 950. That’s a serious dilemma for families eager to celebrate!
But cashews aren’t the only ones hitting the wallet hard. Almonds, once priced at Rs 320 per kg, have now surged to Rs 400, while walnuts have seen an even steeper climb from Rs 400 to Rs 520 per kg. It’s enough to make anyone consider skipping the nuts altogether this Diwali.
Wholesaler Anshul Varshney shared that the ripple effects of reduced imports and soaring demand have not only affected cashews and almonds but have also cascaded into other dry fruits. Raisins, pistachios, makhana, and dried coconut (gola) are now priced with an increase of Rs 100 to Rs 150 per kg. Varshney warns that unless the situation changes, prices could continue to rise as Diwali nears.
So, as families prepare for Diwali, they might have to rethink their shopping lists. What was once an affordable indulgence has turned into a serious budgetary concern, leading many to wonder if they’ll have to forgo their favorite treats this year.
