The Philippine government made a significant call on Friday for the swift and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, a region devastated by conflict and subject to a stringent blockade imposed by Israel. This situation has raised serious concerns within the international community, prompting nations to advocate for immediate assistance to those in need.

In a statement released by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), officials emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach the civilian population in Gaza. The statement particularly highlighted the importance of assisting vulnerable groups, such as the sick, women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The DFA insisted that this aid should be delivered without discrimination and in strict accordance with international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, the DFA asserted that the provision of assistance to Gaza must remain under the auspices of the United Nations. This is crucial, as the UN has previously described the dire situation resulting from the lack of immediate access to food, water, and other essential necessities as having a "disastrous toll" on the Palestinian population. The statement echoed the sentiment that humanitarian responses should be guided by impartial needs assessments and the core principles of neutrality, humanity, and accountability.

Since March 2, 2023, restrictions on food, medical supplies, and fuel have been imposed in Gaza, exacerbating the already critical humanitarian situation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that a "basic amount of food" will be allowed into Gaza; however, he also indicated Israel's intentions to exert greater control over the territory.

This crisis was ignited by a surprise attack from Hamas on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis, including several Filipinos. In retaliation, Israel launched relentless offensives, leading to an alarming death toll of at least 53,000, predominantly among civilians, and displacing a significant portion of Gaza's 2.3 million residents.

The DFA's statement called on all parties involved to support the United Nations in fulfilling its humanitarian mandate in Gaza. They stressed the importance of safeguarding the operational integrity, independence, and effectiveness of UN entities, noting that this is essential for maintaining the legitimacy and credibility of the UN system as it responds to humanitarian needs globally.

In addition, the DFA reiterated the Philippines' commitment to a two-state solution, which aligns with UN General Assembly Resolution 181 and other relevant resolutions. The DFA firmly believes that a two-state framework is the only viable pathway towards achieving a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the region.
