Denny Hamlin Triumphs at Goodyear 400 with Perfect Pit Stop

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Denny Hamlin executed his strategy flawlessly, allowing his pit crew to shine during a crucial moment that led to a remarkable victory at the Goodyear 400 on Sunday. After entering the pits in third place following a late-race caution, Hamlin focused on hitting every mark as he navigated the pit lane, confidently handing control over to his highly skilled team.
The Joe Gibbs Racing crew delivered an exemplary performance, executing a perfect pit stop that propelled Hamlin to the front of the pack. On the subsequent restart, he quickly reclaimed the lead and successfully held off strong challengers, including William Byron, to cross the finish line first. This victory marked Hamlin's 56th career win in NASCAR, solidifying his legacy further with a fifth win at the iconic Darlington Raceway, and his second consecutive win this season.
Reflecting on his achievement, Hamlin acknowledged the significance of reaching 56 wins, stating, âThatâs a huge deal,â a sentiment echoed by his long-time car owner, Joe Gibbs. Hamlin, who has shown remarkable resilience and skill throughout the race, emphasized his determination to continue winning. âI can still do it, I can do it at a high level and look forward to winning a lot of races this year,â he remarked confidently.
Hamlin's victory came after a thrilling race, having previously secured a win at Martinsville. When the final restart approached, Hamlin strategically chose the outside lane, allowing him to surge ahead and create a comfortable margin between himself and the series points leader, William Byron, as well as NASCAR's wins leader, Christopher Bell.
Initially, it appeared as though Ryan Blaney would claim victory, having taken the lead from Tyler Reddick with just three laps remaining. However, the race took a dramatic turn when Kyle Larson spun out, triggering a caution that set the stage for a pivotal final restart. It was during this critical moment that Hamlin's pit crew showcased their excellence, ensuring he was perfectly positioned to seize the lead.
Byron, who had dominated the race by leading for an impressive 243 laps, ultimately finished in second place, followed closely by Hamlin's teammate, Bell, in third. In a light-hearted moment, Hamlin expressed his gratitude, stating, âThere are two people I really love right now, my pit crew and Kyle Larson,â which drew a chorus of boos from the crowd, revealing the competitive spirit of the fans.
Reddick and Blaney rounded out the top five, while Chris Buescher, Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott, Ty Gibbs, and Kyle Busch completed the top 10 finishers. Hamlin attributed his recent success to the tireless efforts of his pit crew, emphasizing, âThey won it last week, they won it this week. It's all about them.â
On the other hand, Blaney expressed his disappointment, believing he was on the cusp of achieving his first-ever victory at Darlington before the caution came out. âOh, no! I thought we had the race won,â he lamented. Byron shared similar sentiments as he sought to make history by leading every lap for a win, only to realize too late that his chances had slipped away during the last round of green-flag pit stops.
In a disappointing turn, Kyle Larson, who won the Southern 500 earlier in 2023, faced early misfortune when he crashed into the inside wall on lap three. After spending considerable time in the garage for repairs, he rejoined the race but finished a disappointing 37th, 161 laps behind the leader.
In a lighter moment, former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, who enjoyed a successful career with consecutive wins at Darlington in 2006 and 2007, played a significant role during the event by driving the pace car. Biffle has recently engaged in humanitarian efforts, conducting rescue missions in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. His dedication earned him the Myers Brothers Humanitarian Award, a testament to his character both on and off the track.
As the NASCAR series heads to Bristol on April 13, followed by its traditional Easter break, the excitement continues to build for upcoming races.
