Since its inception, the Basketclub initiative has embraced the digital age, marrying the ancient art of weaving with contemporary online culture. The founders, Adrianus and Jamie, recognized the potential of using emojis as a modern visual cue to inspire creativity among members. What began as a niche interest quickly blossomed into a vibrant community, prompting the duo to organize open briefs after just five weeks of launching the club.

As a remarkable testament to the club's growing popularity, more than 350 unique baskets have been crafted by participants, showcasing the creativity of a diverse group of makers. The annual emoji briefs, which evolved from the club's original monthly themes, provide just the right balance between structure and creative freedom. “I think some of the best baskets are the ones where you can read the emoji visually,” Adrianus shares, highlighting the innovation that comes from interpreting these symbols through the craft. “A basket is sort of like a puzzle on how to bring all these elements together. How can you create something that visually references the brief? That often involves using interesting materials and challenging the traditional norms of basket weaving,” he adds.

Several baskets created during the project have not only served as artistic expressions but have also entered production or sparked new creative ventures. For instance, Adrianus proudly recounts how designer Simone Post's “Candy Basket” was instrumental in transforming Hermes Japan’s Spring window display into a fantastical world made entirely of sugar. Additionally, designer Chris Kabel’s candle holder, crafted for brief 24, was picked up by the renowned brand Hay, further illustrating the successful intersection of traditional crafting and contemporary design.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Basketclub is its ability to draw makers from around the globe, each contributing their unique perspectives and skills. Adrianus expresses his astonishment at the diverse array of responses to the challenges posed by the club: “It truly exceeds your own imagination. The richness of Basketclub comes from this vast variety of making that converges. Each designer brings different skills and techniques from their cultural backgrounds, along with materials that may only be accessible in their respective countries. This creates a unique tapestry of creativity within a very specific craft,” he explains.
