Stephen Graham has given a no-fuss response to growing speculation over a second season of Adolescence, the breakout Netflix drama he co-created and starred in. Asked by Variety whether the show might return, he said simply: “Let’s see how the figures are.” The four-part series, directed by Philip Barantini and written by Jack Thorne, has become a global hit since landing on Netflix in March. It tells the story of Jamie, a 13-year-old boy accused of stabbing a classmate after falling down an online misogyny rabbit hole. With millions of viewers to date, it’s now one of the biggest shows in Netflix history. Graham’s wife and producing partner Hannah Walters also hinted at more to come, telling Variety she would “work with Netflix all day long” but added that it’s “hard” to follow a success like Adolescence. Speaking to The Guardian, Plan B co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner confirmed discussions with Phillip about a “next iteration” of the show. Dede said the aim was to “widen the aperture” while staying true to the show’s DNA, and to avoid anything that felt repetitive. However, not everyone is sold on the idea of continuing the story. Creator Jack Thorne has said Jamie’s arc is finished, telling ITV he doesn’t believe there’s “anywhere more we can take Jamie." And director Phillip Barantini previously told The Independent he saw the show as “a package of this moment in time." If a second season does happen, it would likely shift focus to a new set of characters and themes- something Dede has also suggested. The new Netflix series has been praised for many things including its being filmed in one continuous shot allowing audiences to feel like they are part of the story.
