A father has expressed outrage after being slapped with an extra fee during a family celebration at a holiday park in Wales. Mark Hayward had planned the weekend getaway at the Haven resort to mark his wife's 50th birthday, booking a cabin that he believed included access to the site's bars and nightclub. However, the family was shocked to discover that this came at an extra cost, not covered by the initial £300 payment. Mark, who works in insurance, was stunned to learn that purchasing entertainment passes for the family over the weekend would add another £260 to their bill. Haven explained that since the accommodation was privately owned and booked directly, rather than through the company, a 'Play Pass' was not included in the price. Mark, nonetheless, felt that this was unclear at the time of booking and has cautioned others against getting caught off guard by the additional fee. Describing his reaction, Mark told the Manchester Evening News: "I was devastated, frustrated, angry. It was like a kick, "I've actually paid £300 plus £75 deposit to then be told it's another £260 for the passes. We thought we were getting passes included." Mark expressed his disappointment when discussing his planned trip, saying: "I'm going away to Wales for three nights, I'm not going to Barbados!" He observed that the situation deteriorated as he examined other options at the campsite and realised that those included the additional pass, reports . He remarked, "We saw it was £260 to have this pass, which I thought was a bit steep. I thought to get a caravan for the weekend, and I saw a caravan for £400 with the passes. I thought, wow." Mark felt penalised as repeat customers, noting, "I just think as returning customers it's harsh that they're inflating the prices for people that are going directly onsite." Having previously holidayed at the site and even worked there as a young man, Mark has fond memories but now feels disillusioned. He shared, "It's my wife's 50th," adding, "I just think it's really harsh. We want to celebrate her birthday." Finances were a concern for him as he said, "We're not exactly rolling in money, I would've liked some sort of goodwill gesture. "You're trying to celebrate something only to be told it's going to be double the price - the excitement has been taken away." In response to the situation, a representative for Haven said: "The satisfaction of our guests is incredibly important to us and we always listen to their feedback. In this case, Mr Haywood booked his stay directly with the owner of a caravan – not through Haven." The spokesperson clarified the nature of private bookings, stating: "This sort of private arrangement provides a stay in a fantastic coastal location, but does not include a Play Pass which gives access to all of Haven's on-site entertainment and facilities. "All visitors to our parks, including those who have rented through a private hire, are welcome to purchase a Play Pass from Haven should they wish to. The best way to ensure complete certainty on what is included in your holiday is to book directly."
