Zaheer Esat, who operates a private school in Ashby-De-La-Zouch, Leicestershire, was abducted last Friday during a visit to his parents on the Caribbean island. The teacher, who holds dual Trinidadian and British citizenship, was taken from a vehicle driven by his 70 year old father and brother-in-law in the Cunupia district of the island. The abduction occurred when armed men blocked their car and pulled him from the back seat after a visit to a local mosque. While his family members were left unscathed, Mr Esat had no phone with him at the time of the kidnapping. In a dramatic turn of events, the 46 year old managed to escape his captors by leaping from the boot of a moving car. Two days after his shocking disappearance, a passer-by discovered him at a cremation site approximately six miles from where he was kidnapped. He was quickly taken to Caroni Police Station and given medical attention, reports the Mirror. Mr Esat recounted his extraordinary escape to the police, explaining how he jumped from the boot of the car. After his harrowing experience, he has since been reunited with his family. Before his son's fortunate escape, a retired Imam, who chose to remain anonymous, made an emotional appeal to the abductors. He implored them to release his son, highlighting the young man's asthma condition and his need for an inhaler. Authorities have since apprehended a 28 year old man. The UK Foreign Office has recognised the case involving the dual national from the UK and Trinidad. A spokesperson commented: "We provided support to a British man who was reported missing in Trinidad and were in contact with the local authorities." According to local news outlets, the detained individual is expected to undergo questioning by Trinidad's Anti-Kidnapping Unit as the investigation proceeds. The CV of Mr Esat, the teacher involved, indicates he holds a directorial position at the Charlton Group of Learning Centres, a private institution catering to children with special educational needs.
