Diner outraged after Sydney restaurant Tilda automatically adds $18.50 tip to bill

A customer has aired his frustration after a Sydney restaurant added a tip to his bill without asking. After dining at Tilda, a Sofitel Wentworth restaurant, on Thursday night with his wife, Mark was surprised when the waiter handed him the bill and pointed out a small detail at the bottom. The waiter told Mark he had automatically added a seven per cent tip of $18.50. It didn’t have to be paid and could be removed on request. Given he saved money on the meal because of a 50 per cent discount, tipping wasn’t an issue but rather the principle was the problem. “I spent a good deal of my youth working in restaurants so I know waiters and kitchen staff work hard, so when we get great service we are happy to tip when appropriate,” he said. “I just don’t like this tipping culture that these businesses are pushing on us. “I’ll decide if the waiter has gone above and beyond.” Mark shared his experience on social media, which instantly gained a flurry of responses from other Aussies who were just as outraged. Many said the restaurant was counting on people to find it too awkward to ask that the tip be removed. “There will be some very small print on the menu saying there’s an optional gratuity. You can tell the waiter you don’t want to pay it but they expect people not to notice and/or to feel shame about asking for it to be removed,” one person said. “It’s a dreadful practice that should be outlawed.” Another said: “If I ever want to tip, it should be me making that decision and choosing how much it should be.” 7NEWS.com.au has contacted Sofitel Wentworth Sydney for comment.
