Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, has unveiled a new entry-level version of its highly anticipated Cybertruck. This latest model, known as the Cybertruck Long Range, boasts a more affordable price tag of $69,990, before factoring in the potential federal tax credit of $7,500. With this pricing strategy, Tesla aims to broaden its appeal among consumers looking for an electric vehicle that combines capability and cost-effectiveness.

In order to achieve this lower price point, Tesla has made several notable adjustments and removed certain features that were previously standard in higher-end models. The new Cybertruck Long Range is equipped with a single rear-wheel drive (RWD) motor, a significant downgrade from the dual motors found in the all-wheel drive (AWD) variant. Additionally, the RWD model does not come with the powered roll-up hard tonneau cover, which has been a signature feature of the Cybertruck. Prospective buyers can choose to leave the truck bed open or opt for a $750 fitted soft tonneau cover. Interestingly, while the hard cover offers enhanced storage security, the soft cover provides an aerodynamic benefit, reportedly extending the vehicle's range by an additional 12 miles.

One of the standout features of the Cybertruck Long Range is its driving range. It can travel up to 350 miles on a single charge, outperforming the AWD model by 25 miles. If equipped with the soft tonneau cover, the range increases further to 362 miles. However, the towing capacity has also seen a reduction; the RWD model can tow up to 7,500 pounds, which is significantly lower than the 11,000 pounds that the AWD variants can handle.

Acceleration is another area where the RWD Cybertruck falls short compared to its AWD counterpart. The new model can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, whereas the more expensive AWD version achieves the same speed in just 4.1 seconds. To further trim costs, Tesla has eliminated features such as adaptive suspension and the 120V and 240V power outlets, which means the RWD model cannot power tools while on the go. Additionally, the recently discontinued battery range extender option adds to consumer disappointment.

Inside the RWD Cybertruck, buyers will find a more modest interior outfitted with textile seats instead of the leatherette upholstery available in other models. This model also lacks the rear seat infotainment touchscreen, which has become a popular feature in Teslas line of vehicles.

During Tesla's 2023 delivery event, the company had initially advertised a different RWD option with a lower range of 250 miles and a base price of $60,990. However, that version never made it to market. Instead, as of 2024, this new and more expensive RWD model is now available for orders in the United States, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step in Tesla's continuous efforts to innovate and expand its electric vehicle lineup.
