Upon first hearing Y2K described as a painfully accurate depiction of the quintessential '90s teenager experience, my curiosity was immediately piqued. Although it took me a little longer than expected to finally watch this much-anticipated comedy, dubbed one of the funniest films of 2024, it was absolutely worth the wait. Kyle Mooneys innovative coming-of-age horror-comedy checks all the boxes for anyone who grew up in that era. From the nostalgic vibes reminiscent of a collision between Superbad and Maximum Overdrive to a plethora of '90s cultural referencesincluding a cameo I wont spoilthis A24 horror flick has it all. However, there was one glaring issue: the central character lacked the charm that would make him relatable and likable.

Join me as I delve deeper into the aspects I truly enjoyed about Y2K, alongside the significant shortcomings I found particularly disheartening, especially concerning the protagonist's characterization throughout this blood-soaked, joke-laden, and immensely entertaining techno-horror film that successfully revived so many cherished memories of my childhood.
