The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has listed a number of benefit payments that could help people currently unemployed. The extra payments provided are intended to financially support those intending to join the work force and need an income while in between jobs. Article continues below This can include a number of benefits available to a wide range of people such as Universal Credit, while other benefits are targeted specifically for one group or those looking for work. While some people may need to claim all the following benefits at the same time to receive the maximum amount, extra financial support can still be gained if you only qualify for one of them. Read below for three benefits that could support you while you look for a new job. If you're eligible to claim both Universal Credit and the New Style JSA, this could be up to £996 every four weeks. Universal Credit Universal Credit is a benefit targeted at supporting people with living costs and is paid monthly. While it is often handed out to those receiving a low income, it is also available to those who are out of work. In order to claim Universal Credit, you must generally bea ged 18 or over, be under State Pension age, and have £16,000 or less in savings and investments. The following rates can be provided per households depending on your situation: Single and under 25: £316.98 Single and 25 or over: £400.14 Living with a partner and you're both under 25: £497.55 Living with your partner and one of you are 25 or over: £628.10 Further details can be found on GOV.UK here. Jobseeker's Allowance While income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is being phased out by Unviersal Credit, some can still apply for the New Style JSA. In order to claim you will need to have worked as an employee at some point and paid Class 1 National Insurance Contributions - generally this needs to have been in the last two to three years. You must also be aged 18 or over while under State Pension age, a well as not in full-time education while living in the UK. There are two rates to JSA which depend on your age: 24 and under: £72.90 a week 25 or over: Up to 92.05 a week Keep in mind that the DWP expects you to be taking 'reasonable' steps to look for work as agreed with a work coach. Pension Credit Pension Credit is a benefit targeted at at people over the State Pension Age who also receive a low income, whether currently seeking employment or otherwise. The payment can provide up to £346.60 if the claimant has a partner each week or £227.10 if the claimant is single. Pension credit can also open the door for a wide range of other perks including Housing Benefit, the Winter Fuel Payment, and a council tax discount.
