The market is flooded with products promising to give you Rapunzel-like tresses, but even with consistent use, it often feels like nothing has changed. Naturally, patience is crucial when it comes to hair growth, but one woman who managed to grow her hair by eight inches in just a year claims the secret lies in what you do before you even start washing your hair. And the best part? She swerved expensive products in favour of natural alternatives instead. Article continues below Mila Jaye, who shares content on TikTok under the handle @vanilla_swirlxx, revealed her "wash day hair routine," stating that she's "mastered" it over time and wanted to pass on her wisdom. She explained that her hair became "healthy, shiny and long" after ten months thanks to the routine she'd perfected prior to using shampoo and conditioner. She explained: "You can whip up this DIY growth oil at home because it's so straightforward and much more cost-effective. It includes castor oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil." She suggests the following recipe, which consists of six natural ingredients... 1oz castor oil 1oz jojoba oil 1oz coconut oil 1oz rosemary oil 1oz grapeseed oil few drops of peppermint oil Mila quipped that she "hates to be that person" who declares something like hair oil "changed her life," but she confessed that she believes it completely revolutionised her hair. "When I didn't oil my scalp my hair was breaking off, my hair was falling out. Every time I'd bleach my hair, I'd get burns on my scalp, which I never get anymore, and also my eczema on my scalp would get so bad [...] and obviously my hair is thicker, shinier, stronger, et cetera, and that's all thanks to hot oiling my scalp," she claimed. Hair massage It's crucial not to skip the massage step once you've worked the oil into your hair, with the goal being to "get all the blood flowing". Healthline even weighs in, noting: "Some research suggests that scalp massages may help promote hair growth. You can massage yourself with your fingertips or a scalp massaging tool". Interestingly, a small 2016 study backs up the belief in the power of scalp massage, finding that regular stimulation could indeed result in fuller hair. This particular study followed nine men who committed to a daily four-minute scalp massage over 24 weeks. By the end of it, the men boasted more voluminous hair compared to when they started. Deep conditioning treatment Before jumping into the shower, devote some time for a "deep conditioning treatment for the ends", as recommended by haircare lover Mila. Her method begins with dampening the ends of the hair using water in a spray bottle, before generously applying your preferred conditioning product. And here's a budget-friendly tip from her: splurging on high-end products isn't necessary to achieve enviable tresses — even affordable options can pack a punch. She suggests the likes of L'Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Mask, which won't break the bank at just £7.99. Mila explained that conditioning treatments "protect the ends" of your hair "so it's less likely to break off". Oil the ends She then moved on to her next tip: "Oil the ends". Despite acknowledging that your hair might look "a little scary," at this stage, Mila outlined her final step to ensure optimal hair health. "I like to add argan oil just to the ends of my hair to really hydrate my ends," she said, advising to apply it "on the very very ends" only. Mila emphasised the importance of the "most important step": leaving your hair treated "for a few hours before you wash your hair," suggesting a duration of four to five hours. "Honestly, I'm just gonna pin up my hair and go about my day," she revealed. If you're "consistent" with this routine "at least once a week," Mila promised results such as "stronger, shinier" hair.
