More info As the weather turns warmer, thoughts naturally drift towards sprucing up your garden in time for summer. To achieve that picture-perfect outdoor space, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to work - but luckily, one gardener has said that it won't take long. Gardening guru Michael, known on TikTok as @themediterraneangardener, has shared essential tasks to tackle right now. Despite the popular 'No Mow May' initiative, he assures gardeners that it's okay to start trimming the grass. After a winter of growth, many gardens look rather wild, and Michael advises: "Now is the perfect time to start cutting your lawn again, but remember to not cut too low. Around 4cm is perfect." A quick trim can significantly enhance the appearance of your lawn, and sets the tone for the rest of the year. He also suggests gardeners should "aerate, scarify, level, and lay seed to repair dead patches" to rejuvenate their lawns. For those with hydrangeas, Michael says now is an opportune moment to "prune" them, emphasising the importance of using the correct method for each variety. Moreover, Michael encourages garden enthusiasts to "unsheath your bananas and other exotics" and take measures to "protect the new shoots of vulnerable plants like delphinias, hostas, and lupins from slugs and snails". If you've got perennials that seem out of place, Michael mentions this is the "perfect time to move" them, adding that while you're at it, you can "divide them to get new plants to fill your borders". He also recommends giving the garden "a good mulch" to both "suppress weeds and improve the soil" and to "start sewing hardy annuals and sunflowers" for a vibrant summer display. If you've set up a system to collect rainwater in your garden, don't forget to "check your guttering" ahead of any April downpours to ensure you're capturing as much water as possible. What other gardening jobs can you do during April? The start of the month calls for a bit of a garden overhaul – think cleaning and repairing your tools, clearing those pathways, sprucing up flower beds, and making sure fences and trellises are sturdy post-winter. April is also the perfect time to think about soil health; setting up new compost bins or topping up the mulch will give your soil the nutrient boost it needs for the growing season. Keep an eye out for pests making their springtime return – consider using natural repellents or barriers to safeguard your plants. Finally, April brings the opportunity to really enjoy your garden and finesse your layout, ensuring you're all set for a summer full of vibrant blooms and maximised spaces.
