Samsung Halts One UI 7 Update for Galaxy S24 Due to Unlocking Bug

After months of anticipation and delays, Samsung Electronics has finally begun the global rollout of its much-anticipated One UI 7 update for Galaxy S24 smartphones. This rollout commenced on April 7, but just a week later, the tech giant made the decision to pause the update due to a critical bug that was preventing users from unlocking their devices. Although it appeared that the issue was primarily affecting users in South Korea, Samsung opted for a precautionary measure and halted the global distribution to ensure the best experience for all users.
This situation has certainly left many Galaxy S24 users feeling frustrated, especially in light of the extensive four-month beta testing program that Samsung had conducted. The purpose of this rigorous beta phase was to identify and resolve any potential issues before the stable version was released to the public. Given that this particular bug affects a fundamental functionunlocking the phoneit is understandable that users are disappointed. Many believe that Samsung should have better identified and addressed these problems ahead of the official release.
In an effort to shed more light on this setback, I reached out to Samsung for a comment. The company's response was somewhat vague, acknowledging that the "rollout schedule is being updated to ensure the best possible experience." However, Samsung did not clarify the root cause of the delay, the timeline for resuming the update, or what measures are being implemented to avoid further complications.
On a brighter note, users of the Galaxy S25 seriescomprising the S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, and the A56who received the One UI 7 update pre-installed have reported no such issues. My own experience with the A56 has been positive, as I encountered no bugs or crashes while using the software. This reinforces the idea that the troubles are mostly linked to the upgrade process from older software versions, particularly from One UI 6 and earlier.
The reason for this discrepancy seems to lie in the significant enhancements that One UI 7 brings. The update features a cleaner visual design, a vertical app drawer, a restructured notification pane, a redesigned camera interface, improved image and video editing capabilities, updates to battery management, security enhancements, as well as an array of new AI functionalities.
While Samsung did introduce some of these features through a point release last year with One UI 6.1.1, the decision to consolidate all improvements into One UI 7 may have contributed to the extended beta testing phase and subsequent delays in the stable rollout.
As of now, Samsung has not made any announcements regarding when the One UI 7 rollout for Galaxy S24 devices will resume globally, nor have they specified when users in India can expect the update. While initial updates began reaching users in markets including South Korea, the U.S., and the U.K., Samsung India has yet to disclose plans for its flagship devices in that region.
Moreover, the timeline for the update's availability on older mid-range Samsung models remains uncertain. With the Galaxy S24 units and the Z Fold 6 yet to transition to One UI 7, it could be a significant wait before users of Samsungs 2024 and older devices can enjoy the latest features. Although I am enthusiastic about the benefits of the update, the recurring delays and bugs evoke memories of the OxygenOS 12 fiasco, albeit with potentially greater implications for users.
