Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Indian Student in Hamilton

In a heartbreaking incident that has left the community in shock, Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old student from India, was fatally shot in Hamilton, Ontario. The tragic event unfolded on Wednesday evening, around 7:30 PM local time, as Randhawa was waiting at a bus stop on her way to work.
Randhawa, who was pursuing a degree in the occupational therapy assistant/physiotherapy assistant program at Mohawk College, was an innocent bystander when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that she sustained a gunshot wound to her chest and was promptly rushed to the hospital; however, despite the urgent medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
In a statement reflecting the profound sorrow shared by the college community, Mohawk College spokesperson Sean Coffey expressed their deep condolences: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Harsimrat Randhawa." The college noted that the loss is felt throughout their community, and they are committed to supporting Randhawa's friends and family during this incredibly difficult time.
The violent shooting took place near the intersection of Upper James Street and South Bend Road when a passenger in a black Mercedes SUV unleashed gunfire directed at the occupants of a white sedan. Following the initial shots, both vehicles fled the scene in different directions, leaving behind chaos and tragedy.
Hamilton police confirmed that Randhawa was not involved in the altercation and was merely an innocent victim caught in the crossfire. The shooting also caused damage to nearby property, with bullet fragments shattering the rear window of a residence on Allenby Avenue where a family was watching television at the time. Fortunately, none of the occupants in the home were injured, highlighting the randomness and danger of the incident.
In a formal response, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed their condolences through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario.
