More info Chocolate might be the order of the day for Easter, but most people will find themselves tucking into a roast dinner over the bank holiday weekend. Supermarkets are in strong competition to pull in the customers at this time of year and most of them have reduced their vegetables including carrots and potatoes to as low as 8p a bag, similar to the reductions we see at Christmas. While it might seem odd to find products so cheap, especially with the way we've seen food prices shoot up in the cost of living crisis, taking a cut there means shoppers are likely to come in spending big on lots of other stuff for the long weekend. With Asda working out cheapest for essentials in our weekly comparison over recent weeks, and with its award-winning lamb and other joints half price for Easter, I decided to head there to see how much I could make a roast dinner for. (Image: Manchester Family / MEN) It's clearly been a popular offer as the end aisle promotion display was almost empty, but thankfully there was more of it stashed away in the usual places. Picking up two lots of each of the veg - 2kg of potatoes, 1kg of carrots, broccoli and parsnips for just 8p each - all that came to just 64p. At £6.17 per kg, the 2.3kg tender lamb leg cost £14.19 and with a 'serves 9-10' guidance was more than enough to feed eight of us. (Image: Manchester Family / MEN) With mint sauce for £1.35 and gravy for £1, the total came to £17.18, which worked out at just £2.15 a head, with the homemade Yorkshire puddings a little extra if you fancy those on your plate too. Join our Family WhatsApp group HERE It's a fraction of what you'd pay for such a meal in a restaurant - with most of it cooked in the air fryer which also keeps costs down - and it's all decent quality too. (Image: Manchester Family / MEN) Asda's lamb, reduced from £12.34 per kg with its Rollback promotion, was named as a joint winner with Waitrose's £18.50 a kg leg of lamb in the Good Housekeeping Institute Easter Taste Test 2025. Asda was the overall winning supermarket in the taste test, with its 800g Boneless Salmon Side also named ‘Best Salmon’ by GHI out of 12 other seafood centrepieces tested. The retailer's veg offer, which also includes swede for 8p, is running until Monday, April 21 in store and online while stocks last. (Image: Manchester Family / MEN) A spokesperson for Asda said: "Putting the customers’ needs first, Asda is dedicated to offering families market-leading prices not just at Easter but all year round. Resulting in Which? recently naming Asda the cheapest of the traditional supermarkets for a larger shop, for the third month in a row – so far, unbeaten this year. "It isn’t just unbeatable value that the supermarket is offering but high quality too, after being named the overall winning supermarket in the biggest ever Good Housekeeping Institute Easter Taste Test 2025. "Asda works together with farmers to agree on a fair price all year round. Discounts on veg such as this, at times of the year like Easter and Christmas when families need it most, is an investment made by Asda and doesn't impact seasonal prices agreed with its growers."
