The man was seen casually walking in the middle of a set of tracks on the Sutton Park line in Sutton Coldfield – within the park on Friday (April 17). Rail enthusiasts had gathered to watch a locomotive headed from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Severn Valley Railway in Worcestershire. But were shocked to see the man walking along the rail line with his coat over one arm. He said: “It happened on Friday (April 17). “A steam engine was due to go through Sutton Park at 5pm. “I was with a couple of rail enthusiasts and we were waiting to see the steam engine with a supporting coach. “It was about 10 minutes before the steam engine was due and the man came from near Little Bracebridge all the way up to where we were near Streetly Gate." He knew he’d done something wrong. “If you don’t know Sutton Park, you’re better off sticking to the footpaths. “It’s safety at the end of the day. There’s freight trains go on it carrying heavy loads like coal trailers and ometimes nuclear waste containers “It’s very dangerous thing for anyone to do. There are all sorts of risks. “It’s a very sad situation, and it’s fortunate there was not a fatality. Article continues below “As regards to signage, at that crossing point, I will raise it at the next Sutton Park Advisory Committee meeting and will be contacting officers before then to see if there’s suitable signage there to warn people.”
