I tried denim dresses at New Look, River Island and Next - one £40 option is perfect for summer

Denim dresses have long been considered a wardrobe essential for fashion enthusiasts. And as spring rolls around, nothing says casual-cool quite like one of these chic, playful frocks. An effortless way to channel that in-between-season style, denim dresses are so easy to style and incredibly versatile. Whether dressed up with boots and a biker jacket or down with trainers and a tote, they're the ultimate ‘throw on and go’ piece. As a result, the high street is teeming with denim styles this month. I tried on three chic styles from New Look, River Island and Next - here’s how they stacked up. With its relaxed fit and drop shoulders, New Look’s denim tunic dress is made for laid-back days when you want to be comfortable but still look cute. The collared V-neckline adds a polished touch without trying too hard, and the chest pocket breaks up the solid denim with subtle utility vibes. The fit is genuinely relaxed without drowning your shape, and it’s short enough to feel flirty without fear of a wardrobe mishap. Coming in sizes 6-18, it's a great throw-on piece for holidays, brunches, or casual errands. Shop it for yourself here . River Island – Blue Denim Seamed Shirt Dress, £49 This dress feels a little more elevated thanks to its seam detailing and structured design. The popper fastening adds a slightly edgy twist, while the cotton fabric blend has a bit of stretch, making it more flattering as it has a subtle sculpting effect . It’s tailored without being stiff, and the collared neckline and short sleeves tow the line between smart and casual. That said, the price is a bit steeper compared to the others, and the stiffer denim might feel too heavy on particularly hot days. This one does come in more sizes, though, going from 6-22. You can buy the River Island dress here. Next – Mid Blue 100% Cotton Front Pocket Denim Mini Dress, £35 The Next offering is the cheapest dress of the three . It’s 100% cotton, no fuss, and super easy to chuck on no matter where you’re headed. The front pockets give it a practical, slightly vintage feel, and the fit feels roomy - however, I don’t think it was as flattering on me as the New Look version. It’s available in regular and tall, which is a big plus for those who often struggle with hem lengths, but comes in sizes XS to XL rather than UK dress sizes, which may make it trickier to find your perfect fit. If you’re after something a little more playful, it also comes in red. Because it's pure cotton, the fabric is breathable and ideal for spring and summer, but it also means there’s no stretch, which might make it feel a bit restrictive across the shoulders or bust depending on your shape.
