The Winnipeg Jets (1-0) erased a third-period deficit to defeat the St. Louis Blues 5-3 in Game 1 of their Western Conference Quarterfinals series. It was a back-and-forth game all the way through, but the Jets were able to overcome the adversity to take the early advantage in the series. The Blues (0-1), despite winning the special teams battle in the game, were unable to hold up under a relentless Jets attack in the back half of the game. Game Recap The Blues opened the scoring with a power-play marker near the halfway point of the first. After the Jets tried to create an odd-man rush and failed, the puck found Robert Thomas, who ripped a shot over the glove of Connor Hellebuyck to make it 1-0. Mark Scheifele tied things up with a power-play goal of his own, banking it off Blues defender Ryan Suter and over the shoulder of Jordan Binnington to make it 1-1. He deflected a Luke Schenn point shot past Binnington to give them a 2-1 lead. Shortly after, the Blues tied the game on a goal from Oscar Sundqvist. He collected a loose puck off Luke Schenn’s skate and was able to bury it in tight to make it 2-2. The Blues took the lead with their second power-play goal of the game. Jordan Kyrou took advantage of a screen in front of Hellebuyck and found the top corner before Hellebuyck could even see it. It took until the halfway mark of the third period, but the Jets knotted things up again. Scheifele found Alex Iafallo at the side of the net, and he was able to sweep it past Binnington on the far side to make it 3-3. Kyle Connor played the hero, as he scored the eventual game winner with 1:36 left in the third period. The Jets came back despite trailing to start the period, something that the Blues were quite effective at stopping during the regular season. Adam Lowry added an empty net goal to make it 5-3 as the Jets took the early advantage in the series. Hellebuyck recorded the win, stopping 14 of 17 shots. Binnington picked up the loss after giving up four goals on 25 shots.
