For families across Merseyside and beyond, Easter weekend may consists of an egg hunt, enjoying chocolate eggs, hot cross buns or a roast dinner, taking part in a parade, attending a local church service and more. But there is also another tradition many Scousers have long had for this time of year. Whether it be head to toe outfits or just a pair of new, stylish shoes, getting new 'Easter clothes' has long been the norm for many Merseyside kids. ‌ From white frilly socks and new trainers to duster coats, floral dresses and more, trends have come and gone. And as Easter 2025 gets underway, we wanted to take another look back at some of your memories from years gone by. This list isn't intended to be comprehensive and includes a number of memories across the generations from ECHO readers. See how much you remember below. April 1, 1959 (Image: Mirrorpix ) On Facebook, one woman said: "Yes we used to get new clothes for Easter Whitsun, Christmas, even August." Another replied: "Me too. Duster coat, dress and white sandals for Easter." One commented: "Yes we did and new Clark’s sandals." One posted: "Plus short white socks to go with the new Clark’s sandals. At Whitsun Tide we had a new summer dress. So long ago now." ‌ Another wrote: "We got a new hat, Sunday coat and new shoes for Easter. Patent leather shoes, think mum buffed them up with valylene." Another woman wrote: "Greatie Market every year, white buckskin shoes." One commented: "Yes it is! Hat too for Easter and sad always took a photo. My mum made most of my clothes, don't remember any particular shop." One commented: "My mum used to make mine - a lilac duster coat, sticky out frock, white ankle socks and new white shoes." ‌ Another said: "Not always new clothes, but Easter sandals." One posted: "Always used to get new clothes for Easter Sunday! As a little girl I used to love getting a new frilly dress - they were often better than the ones we got for Christmas!" Another said: "Yep, always got our Clark’s Raster Sandals on Bold Street!" ‌ One commented: "Yes remember it well new clothes that you wouldn't get to wear after the Easter holiday was over EXCEPT ONLY ON SUNDAY'S." One commented: "Always got new clothes at Easter in the 40's/50s. Usually with Sterlers cheque." One posted: "Mum did her best running our little cafe - a young widow with the four of us to feed and clothe was a struggle. The best time ever was when she had a win on the coupon. Taken to a shop we’d never use and told to choose two Easter outfits - duster coats and matching dresses etc. Bless her." One posted: "Oh yes my mum made our dresses. We always had white sandals and white socks." Another said: "Socks, knickers and if we were lucky, an outfit." ‌ Another said: "Always new clothes at Easter - tradition." One posted: "Yellow dress (homemade) and white shoes and hat." One commented: "Yes always when I had mine it was always sailors suits or copycat from market everything white." One commented: "St John's Market to the clothes stalls and sandals from Dolcis. Easter was always too cold for the choice of clothes and footwear." Another said: "Yep Bucky shoes or boots loved them, always whitening them." One posted: "New buck skin white sandals and mum made me lovely dresses. Clarks shoe shop for sandals and Blacklers in Liverpool for the dress material. White socks finished off the look." ‌ One posted: "A provvy cheque to be spent in Colliers London Road. Cheque put in a pod and whizzed up to the cash office inside overhead pipes." One commented: "My gran always got them from a warehouse at Easter and Xmas. Mum knitted socks." One man said: "Late 40's, early 50's, I got new sandals, short grey socks, new short sleeved shirts and I started wearing shorts again for the summer, well, until about late September when it started to get bloody." One woman said: "I remember at Easter we always got yellow coloured dresses, canvas sandals, a hat, and gloves. We would get white clothes for Whit, red at Christmas." Article continues below Another said: "Yes bought my kids Easter clothes up until the age of 16, when they were younger I went to Cara's on Breck Road as they got older it became Dirty Kidz or JD for my boys and my two girls were River Island or H&M or frocks in the precinct." One man said: "TJ Hughes, with a provident check." And another woman said: "Yes we weren't well off. But we always got new clothes for Easter. I always bought new clothes for my children too. Us Scousers, are great like that."
