Mum’s eight-word question led to McDonald’s empire

Mum’s eight-word question led to McDonald’s empire Jayne Aspin-Mayne went from corporate life to McDonald's franchise owner after asking her husband a question McDonald's franchisee Jayne Aspin Mayne (Image: McDonalds ) A woman’s eight-word question would lead her to become at the helm of several McDonald’s in the North West. Most days, Jayne Aspin-Mayne, who grew up in Burton, Wirral, can be found behind one of her venues. Usually, amidst the hustle and bustle of her establishments, the 41-year-old plays a hands-on role, whether she's assisting the crew, engaging with regulars, or guiding fresh employees up the career ladder. However, this busy mum-of-two wasn't always flipping burgers; previously, she thrived in the manufacturing industry, working within supply chain management for a major company. The former Neston High School student told the ECHO: "I had a successful career in manufacturing, working in the supply chain sector with a large organisation. I worked quite hard there, and it came to the point where they said to me, 'What's next with your role?'." “They asked if I wanted a European position, but nothing about me wanted to do that. I loved working with people and being part of a team. So I came home and spoke to my husband and said: 'What on earth am I going to do?'. I didn't want to progress with that offer, so I needed to really think about it. We wanted our own business, but we had worked really hard for the money we had saved, so we didn't know where to go." During this uncertain time, Jayne delved into the world of franchising. Her research led her directly to the Golden Arches. As she explains, McDonald's simply stood out among the rest for all the right reasons. She said: "I loved what McDonald's was doing with the community. I went to an open day to chat to other franchisees. I then applied and underwent a six-month process before being told I was accepted. It was amazing to get this offer." In March 2020, Jayne took over her inaugural restaurant in Lymm, poised just outside Warrington, one week before the global lockdown triggered by the pandemic. Despite the roadblocks presented by COVID-19, Jayne didn't let that put her off, as she later acquired another McDonald's in Birchwood, Cheshire. The businesswoman was already familiar with entrepreneurship's "pros and cons" as both her parents owned small businesses. For Jayne, who has a fondness for the McChicken Sandwich meal, stewarding two of the fast-food giant's outposts where she lives has been a joy, not least because it has strengthened her ties within the local community. The University of Central Lancashire graduate said: "Most people are fascinated by my job because they don't actually know what it means. People don't actually realise the whole scale of McDonald's, like just my venues alone, I manage 300 people. “I'm so lucky I live only around a mile away from my closest venue, so I'm there most days. That's just my management style. I can make it work around my family and my children. " Article continues below In addition to being a successful businesswoman, her children, 15-year-old James and 10-year-old Emily, think she is a "very cool mum" for owning the two eateries. She added: "It certainly hopes when it comes to hosting birthday parties, that's for sure.
