Introducing Chrome OLED Mode: A Darker and Brighter Browsing Experience
The newly launched Chrome OLED Mode extension offers users a pitch-black theme designed to enhance website readability, particularly in low-light conditions. This innovative feature transforms standard web pages into high-contrast formats, making nighttime browsing a much more comfortable experience.
This extension is a revived version of the previously popular Super Dark Mode project. Unfortunately, Super Dark Mode faced an unexpected removal from the Chrome Web Store for reasons that remain unclear. After its abandonment by the original developer, a dedicated team has worked diligently to decompile, refactor, and significantly improve upon its framework. According to users, Chrome OLED Mode outperforms the widely used Dark Reader extension in terms of functionality and ease of use.
Implementation Details
The Chrome OLED Mode extension operates as a static browser-side script, harnessing the capabilities of React for dynamic rendering and real-time updates of components. Upon loading, it patiently waits for the Document Object Model (DOM) to finish its loading process. Subsequently, the extension injects its content into a designated element identified as #__oled
, utilizing ReactDOM.createRoot
for mounting a themed layout component that envelops the core user interface. This setup allows for declarative reactivity and efficient updates to the DOM.
The layout system is sourced from @plasmo-static-common/react
and is reinforced by a custom stylesheet optimized for OLED displays. The extension is built using Parcel, which manages bundling and dependency resolution through a simulated require system. This embedded functionality mimics module caching and isolation, ensuring that the extension remains compatible with the constraints of the extension sandbox and its update mechanisms. Importantly, Chrome OLED Mode supports four distinct operational modes, offers 40 specialized themes tailored to specific sites, and features a management system for whitelists along with automatic scheduling capabilities.
