More info Pope Francis has made his first significant public appearance since he returned to the Vatican since recovering from his illness, blessing thousands of worshippers who gathered to celebrate Easter Sunday at the holy city. Pope Francis appeared on balcony over the entrance of St Peter's Basilica, waving and sharing his blessings with the gathered crowds. He was then driven in the popemobile through the crowds in St Peter's Square, waving as he went, much to the delight of those assembled for the special mass. Pope Francis said, before the remainder of his Easter address was read by his aide. "May the risen Christ grant Ukraine, devastated by war, his Easter gift of peace, and encourage all parties involved to pursue efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace," the message read. "In this Jubilee year, may Easter also be a fitting occasion for the liberation of prisoners of war and political prisoners!" Chants of Viva il Papa were heard, meaning long live the Pope. It was the longest public appearance the Pontiff has made recently as he continues to regain his strength following his illness. Pope Francis has been away from public duties since he was hospitalised in February, when he received treatment for double pneumonia during his hospital stay. He was hospitalised for five weeks, and last gave an address when he left hospital on March 23rd, giving a short greeting as he departed Rome's Gemelli hospital, and gave a short greeting at a mass for the sick and for healthcare workers in early April. The Pope has been unable to offer his weekly noon-time prayer in St. Peter's Square on Sundays since early February, when he initially became unwell. He was admitted to hospital on February 14th.
