Advertisement A growing roadside memorial reflects the community’s grief following a fatal collision early Sunday that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy from Sault Ste. Marie. On Sunday, flowers were placed at the southwest corner of Goulais Avenue and Third Line. By Monday morning, the memorial had expanded to include two hockey jerseys, wreaths, stuffed animals and heartfelt messages of remembrance. The memorial is located just a few hundred metres north of Korah Collegiate & Vocational School. Messages have been written on a metal covering around the utility pole at that corner, including: 'I loved growing up with you,' 'love you forever' and multiple instances of 'fly high, buddy.' Permanent markers have been left at the site for others to write messages. A local bakery, Baking By Cookie, put up a Facebook post that others have shared locally, describing the loss. "Our hearts are heavy. Our community suffered an unimaginable loss. A young man who wore the number 19 with pride on the ice, and in life, has left us far too soon. "To his family, friends, teammates, and everyone feeling the weight of this tragedy: please know that you are not alone. We grieve with you, we stand with you, and we carry his memory in our hearts." The post also includes local resources for those who need to speak with someone. "You are not alone, and support is here for you. At approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, Sault Police officers were called to the scene of the collision, between a pickup truck and e-bike in the 800 block of Goulais Avenue. Paramedics provided lifesaving efforts to two teenagers who were riding on the e-bike. Both were transported to hospital. A 15-year-old died from their injuries, police said, while the other 15-year-old remains in hospital with serious injuries. Sault Police say an 18-year-old was driving the pickup truck northbound on Goulais Avenue. When the driver attempted to turn left onto Third Line West, the truck hit the e-bike, which was travelling south on Goulais. The 18-year-old driver was arrested and has been remanded into custody, with the next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday. Police did not disclose what charge the driver is facing nor the driver's name. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the collision, or who may have security camera or dashcam footage, is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Sean O’Dell by calling 705-949-6300 ext. 288. SooToday has not identified the crash victims at this point because their families have not released the names. This is not the first time a fatal collision has occurred at that intersection. On Jan. 5, 2008, 16-year-old Miranda Palin was pronounced dead after a collision at the same intersection. She had been walking on the street with a friend when she was hit by a pickup truck.
