During their baby's first year, British parents use up 5,238 baby wipes and 3,365 nappies, while only managing an average of four hours sleep a night, according to a survey. While many claimed the first year of their baby's life was a blur, the study also found that they took an impressive 6,689 photos of their baby in the first year – averaging just over 18 per day. New parents also received 13 gifts from loved ones or colleagues and were given eight pieces of unsolicited advice. Interestingly, 71 per cent of respondents were taken aback by the amount of stuff their newborn required. A spokesperson for Asda, which commissioned the study to promote its Baby Event offering up to 50 per cent off on key essentials until Sunday 11th May, remarked: "It's amazing what you can get through in just one year. "From baby wipes and nappies to breast pads and dummies – there is so much a new parent has to think about." The research also revealed that new parents spent £178 on nappies each month, £205 on baby clothes and £56 on baby wipes. They also spent £60 a month on toys and books for their little one's development. Encouragingly, 75 per cent felt prepared for their baby's arrival and were confident they had everything they needed. Nappies (84 per cent), baby wipes (80 per cent) and dummies (38 per cent) were the top items parents couldn't live without. And 13 per cent confessed they would have been lost without car seat cleaner, as well as concealer and hairspray. A spokesperson from Asda commented: “It’s great to see so many parents were fully prepared for their new arrival. “We know the list of what a new baby needs can feel endless (and expensive) so our focus through our Baby Event is to make sure parents have access to everything they need at prices which don’t break the bank.”
