An investigation into the cause of a fatal flat fire in Mansfield is continuing. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) said crews were called to a property on Park Avenue in the early hours of Easter Monday (April 21). A 999 call was made after another resident saw smoke in the stairwell. The fire was found to be in the basement of the building, where sadly, a man in his 70s was also found. NFRS confirmed the man died. A joint investigation between Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS) and Nottinghamshire Police is ongoing to determine the cause. Posting on X, the fire service said the investigation was continuing. It said: "An investigation into this fire is still underway and we are working on scene with @nottspolice colleagues. "Thank you for your patience whilst we deal with this incident." NFRS Group Manager, Leigh Holmes, said: "We would like to send our sincere condolences to the gentleman's friends and family at this incredibly sad time. We will continue to work with our partners to establish the cause of this fire, and in the coming days we will ensure to visit local residents to offer them reassurance and fire safety advice. "Thank you to the local community for their patience and cooperation."
