From a list of over 260 names proposed by online survey participants the school naming committee narrowed it down to five and recommended one The new Centre Wellington elementary school is one step closer to getting a name. Grand River Public School is the recommended name of the new school at Kirvan Street and Elliot Avenue East within the Fergus Storybrook subdivision. The 328-pupil junior kindergarten to Grade 8 school is set to open for the 2025/2026 school year. The name was recommended by the school naming committee and was voted in favour last week at the Upper Grand District School Board’s finance and facilities committee meeting. The name still has to go to the board for approval. There were over 530 participants in an online survey where over 260 names were proposed. The school naming committee narrowed it down to five names; Grand River, Limestone Ridge, Little Falls, Riverbend and Storybrook. A virtual town hall was hosted where attendees ranked the names. Grand River was the most popular name, said Belal Taha, superintendent of education, during the finance and facilities committee meeting. Grand River was recommended because the Grand River is the body of water that flows through Fergus and has historical significance and connection to Indigenous heritage, said in a report. Schools are now not named after a person or corporation after the board’s naming policy was revised earlier this year.
