In a significant development in the realm of travel and loyalty rewards, Delta Air Lines and Uber have announced a new partnership that allows Delta SkyMiles members to seamlessly link their accounts with Uber. This initiative, which aims to enhance the travel experience for customers, was officially unveiled today, marking the culmination of discussions that began earlier this year.

By linking their SkyMiles accounts to Uber, customers can now earn valuable miles for their spending. Specifically, SkyMiles members will receive one mile for every dollar spent on standard UberX rides to the airport. For those opting for the more luxurious Uber Comfort and Uber Black services, the rewards increase to two miles per dollar. Additionally, travelers using the Uber Reserve feature to book premium rides will earn an impressive three miles for each dollar spent. For food delivery through Uber Eats, members can also earn one mile for every dollar spent on orders exceeding $40 from selected restaurants and grocery stores.

Delta customers will now have the added convenience of using the airline's smartphone application to book Uber rides directly to and from the airport. As an added perk, later this year, SkyMiles members who log into the in-flight Wi-Fi service will be treated to a special offer: a 30% discount on Uber Reserve rides booked for pick-up upon landing.

This collaboration with Uber is part of Deltas broader strategy to enhance its loyalty program by forming partnerships with various brands. The airline has previously established similar alliances with popular brands such as Starbucks, Hertz, and Ticketmaster, all aimed at providing SkyMiles members with more avenues to earn rewards.

Interestingly, this new partnership comes on the heels of Delta's previous collaboration with Lyft, which allowed customers to earn miles for ride-hailing services. However, Delta has chosen to pivot away from the smaller competitor in favor of Uber, which boasts a significantly larger market share, higher ride volumes, and greater revenue potential in the ride-hailing industry.

In addition to the partnership announcement, Uber has unveiled plans to introduce an airport shuttle service in Atlanta. This follows the successful launch of similar services at New York Citys JFK and LaGuardia airports. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, known as a major hub for Delta, will be one of the first locations to benefit from this new shuttle service.

The introductory pricing for the shuttle will be set at $10, which will later increase to $18.50 after the promotional period ends. Starting in May, Uber plans to offer multiple routes connecting Downtown and Midtown Atlanta to the airport, with service operating every 30 minutes from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, seven days a week. Furthermore, Uber has revealed that it is currently in discussions with Boston's Logan International Airport to potentially expand its shuttle services to that location as well.
