Richard Reid was caught after uploading indecent images to the Discord chat app. ‌ The 37-year-old from Yardley confessed he had a sexual interest in children. Article continues below Reid, of Fordesley Road, was jailed for 20 months at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, April 9. He had pleaded guilty to one charge of taking indecent photographs of a child, two counts of 'making' them as well as two offences of voyeurism. Judge Peter Cooke considered suspending the prison sentence but ultimately ruled to jail Reid, who had broken down in tears throughout the hearing. ‌ He said: "This offending was so devious, so protracted and constituted such a gross betrayal that it's one of those cases where the trump card in that list of six factors (in the imposition of suspended sentence guidelines) is that appropriate punishment can only be achieved by immediate custody. So it's to prison you must go." Prosecutor Pierre de Garis told the court West Midlands Police's child sexual exploitation team received information about an account on Discord which had uploaded indecent images. He stated the account and associated internet connection were linked to Reid. ‌ Police executed a warrant at his address and seized a number of devices which contained indecent images. Simon Hanns, defending, stated his client was 'quite properly disgusted with himself'. Article continues below He said: "He still struggles to explain why it happened. "He doesn't seek to suggest there wasn't an interest in children. "He accepts he had an interest but has already started to take steps to address it."
