A seagull spotted at a protest against the UK Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of a woman has gone viral after flying through the air holding a trans flag. The UK Supreme Court passed the ruling on 16 April, which argued the term “sex” in the 2010 Equality Act refers to “biological sex” and thus excludes trans women. The ruling has been met with joy from right-wing activists such as JK Rowling, who donated £70k to the group behind the case, and with fear and outrage from trans people and their allies. Following the ruling, UK streets were lined with tens of thousands protesting its outcome – and the numbers were not limited to humans, because the animal kingdom got involved too. Originally posted to a TikTok account belonging to a user named @citizenreid, a video showing a seagull with a trans flag has racked up over 2.3 million views, with the caption “Seen at the demo in London today.” In the video, the seagull – which one commenter has deemed “one of the gulls” – picks up a handheld trans flag that had fallen into a body of water in St. James Park, before quite literally flying it around for a few seconds. The person in the video shouts, “Valentina say ally,” before the seagull takes off, in reference to a separate the viral TikTok sound in which a user’s friend named Valentina is deemed an LGBTQ+ ally. Users have commented on the video with joy; one wrote, “Someone get her a platform! Let Valentina speak!” and another said that the seagull was, “literally flying the flag of support.” “‘They’re transing the mice,’ nah, what you need to worry about is these seagulls transing YOU,” another joked. User @citizenreid has posted a follow up TikTok, “explaining” the video and joking, “Never in my life did I expect that a random moment at a protest where we were actually leaving, crossing the bridge in St. James Park … [would get] almost three million views.” They continued, “I’m so glad we could all celebrate this trans pride seagull thing!” One the flip side, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has since said that he is “pleased” with the ruling, and equalities minister Bridget Phillipson yesterday (22 April) told trans individuals to use toilets “based on biological sex” Share your thoughts!
