Politics latest: Kemi Badenoch 'will not be Tory leader for very long'

'Palpable' tension between Jenrick and Badenoch who 'will not be leader for very long' We've been hearing from our panel after accusations of disloyalty were levelled at shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick. In case you missed it, our deputy political editor Sam Coates has obtained a recording of Robert Jenrick - the energetic shadow justice Secretary who ran for the Conservative leadership himself, of course - telling a group of students that he's determined to stop Reform and wants the right to be united. Listen to the audio here: With some suggesting that he is continuing a shadow leadership campaign to replace Kemi Badenoch at the top of the Tory party, we ask our panel what they think. Labour MP Dawn Butler says: "There's obviously tensions there. And the fact that he says 'I'm going to make sure it's not going to happen' shows that he feels he will be leader by the next election. "And when you're in parliament, you can just see it, you can feel it - it's quite palpable - that she's not going to be leader for very long." Former Tory MP and Onward thinktank director Sir Simon Clarke disagrees, saying: "Do I think she faces an incredibly difficult challenge? Absolutely. "We've come off the back of the worst election result in our history. We're nearly six months into what is a multi-year challenge of rebuilding the credibility of the centre-right. "It is not going to be done in one go, and nor are next month's local elections a general election. It is in many ways, I'm afraid, going to be the washing through of a generational defeat, and that will make the results quite difficult." He adds that Badenoch should "absolutely" be the leader at the time of the next election, and the party should stop looking inward.
