West Australian midfielder Chad Warner has re-committed to the Sydney Swans, signing a two-year deal to remain in the harbour city despite serious interest from West Coast and Fremantle. Warner has been at the centre of speculation that he was feeling homesick and looking to return to his home state, with the All-Australian a significant target for both local clubs. However, the 23-year-old has paid little heed to those rumours, with his fresh deal believed to be highly lucrative. Warner will now stay at the Swans until at least the end of 2027 but will still only be 26 when it expires, leaving the door open for a homecoming. Speculation of a return to Western Australia hit overdrive in January when the powerful midfielder purchased a $2.9 million home in Applecross - a move similar to that of Luke Jackson before he defected from Melbourne to the Dockers at the end of 2022. However, in recent months, reports of former West Coast premiership player and first-year coach Dean Cox renewing Warner’s love of the bloods have surfaced. The Eagles and Fremantle were believed to have tabled high-paid multi-year deals to lure the All-Australian back to his hometown. West Coast even loaded up on future first-round draft picks in 2024 in anticipation of attempting a trade for the East Fremantle product at the end of the 2025 campaign, before he would have hit the free agency market in 2026. Swans teammates have shown nothing but confidence in Warner, Errol Gulden even joking his Applecross property would make a “nice holiday home”. Cox had always expressed quiet confidence that Warner would reject the WA offers. “For me, I want to make sure, first of all, that Chad plays his best footy for this football club, and he enjoys his time whilst he’s here,” he said last month. “Hopefully that is for longer ... you want to keep your best players and Chad’s one of those. “He is passionate, he loves his time at the footy club and he loves playing with his teammates.” Warner and the Swans are out to redeem their thumping at the hands of Brisbane in last season’s decider in 2025 but have made a less-than-impressive start, sitting 14th with two wins and four losses. However, Warner has been on form, averaging 20.3 disposals, four tackles and four clearances through six rounds.
