Our free email updates are the best way to get headlines direct to your inbox An urgent alert has been sent out to consumers using 3G, as a leading mobile operator has disclosed its plans to decommission the service. O2 has announced it will align with other principal networks in discontinuing the 3G service, which is set to affect many UK residents by leaving them without mobile data. The provider follows suit after a pact with the Government in 2021. The shift promises enhanced 4G and 5G services that the UK's four main networks claim will benefit users. Not only direct O2 customers but also those on associated networks such as Tesco Mobile, GiffGaff, and Sky Mobile will be impacted if they rely on 3G. For devices limited to 3G, losing data means no internet access, including popular apps like WhatsApp, outside of WI-Fi areas—although making emergency calls remains possible. Virgin Media O2 has already initiated the phase-out, starting with Durham, and now confirms Norwich, Telford, and Guildford will see 3G services end on July 16, with Torquay to follow suit on August 4, reports the Mirror. O2's official website outlines the gradual 3G shutdown across the nation within this year, stating: "Like other networks in the UK and abroad, we're switching off our 3G network so that we can focus on our faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks. "Our full 3G switch off will start from April 2025, in Durham, and will continue across the UK throughout the rest of the year." Before the significant transition away from 3G, it's essential to ensure your device is ready. Firstly, verify that your device supports WiFi and 4G Calling. For those with a compatible device, activating WiFi and 4G Calling is crucial for an optimal experience post-3G shutdown. Detailed guidance can be found on O2's WiFi and 4G Calling page. Should you possess a device that isn't compatible with WiFi and 4G Calling, it's time to consider getting a new one.
