Bowers & Wilkins (B&W), a renowned name in high-fidelity audio, has officially unveiled its latest offering: the Px7 S3. This third-generation model is being touted by the company as its "most advanced and capable" wireless headphone to date. The Px7 S3 replaces the earlier Px7 S2e model released in 2023 and introduces several groundbreaking features that elevate the listening experience.

One of the standout innovations of the Px7 S3 is the inclusion of a discrete on-board headphone amplifier, a first for this product line. This enhancement is designed to provide superior sound quality, catering to audiophiles who demand the best from their headphones. In addition to this, the headphones boast an upgraded active noise-cancellation (ANC) system that employs eight microphonesfour dedicated to monitoring external noise, two to monitoring driver output, and two specifically for voice pickup. This multifaceted approach, combined with Analog Devices latest Pure Voice processing technology, aims to deliver an exceptional balance between noise suppression and audio fidelity.

Another significant advancement is the upcoming support for spatial-audio processing and Bluetooth LE Audio, which features the Auracast broadcast mode. These technologies promise to enhance the listening experience further, allowing users to feel immersed in their music as if they were in a live setting.

Hardware Changes

The Px7 S3 also features newly designed 40 mm biocellulose drivers. B&W has re-engineered the driver chassis, voice coil, suspension, and magnet components to minimize distortion and enhance the overall dynamics of sound reproduction. The drivers are strategically angled within the earcups, a design choice made to ensure a consistent path length for sound waves reaching the ear, thereby creating a more natural listening experience.

Dedicated Amplification

Unlike its predecessors, which relied on system-on-chip power sources, the S3 employs a dedicated analog amplifier. Bowers & Wilkins asserts that this change offers more scale and energy, which should translate to richer, more engaging audio. However, the company has yet to disclose specific power specifications.

Wireless & Wired Connectivity

The Px7 S3 comes equipped with Qualcomms aptX Adaptive codec that supports high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz, alongside the newer aptX Lossless codec, which ensures the highest quality playback possible. In addition to wireless capabilities, users will find a 3.5 mm analog cable and a USB-C cable included for both charging and audio purposes. Later this year, a firmware update will introduce support for Bluetooth LE Audio, along with the much-anticipated spatial-audio processing feature.

Enhanced Noise Cancellation & Call Quality

B&W's in-house ANC system in the Px7 S3 utilizes its sophisticated eight-microphone array to deliver unmatched noise cancellation. The four microphones that monitor external sounds work in tandem with the two that track the headphone drivers' output and the two dedicated to picking up voice. This combination is intended to suppress unwanted ambient noise effectively while preserving the integrity of the audio quality for music and calls.

Ergonomics & User Controls

When it comes to comfort and usability, the Px7 S3 features a slimmer yoke and a lower-profile headband, complemented by thicker memory-foam ear cushions. The physical controls have been redesigned for improved accessibility; the power switch has been relocated to the left earcup, while the three media buttons have been reshaped for easier identification by touch. Furthermore, a new Quick Action button allows users to cycle through ANC modes or activate a mobile voice assistant based on their preferences.

Battery Life

B&W rates the Px7 S3 for an impressive 30 hours of playback time with ANC activated. If users find themselves in need of a quick energy boost, a mere 15-minute fast charge can provide up to seven additional hours of listening time.

App Integration & Equalizer Features

Accompanying the Px7 S3 is the Bowers & Wilkins Music app, which facilitates setup, provides streaming integrations, and allows for firmware updates. A newly added five-band parametric equalizer enables users to store multiple sound presets, while a True Sound switch allows users to bypass the equalizer, reverting to the factory sound profile for a more authentic audio experience.

Pricing & Availability

The Px7 S3 is currently available for purchase in the U.K. at a price of 399 and in Europe for 429. U.S. pricing is anticipated to be around $429; however, B&W has indicated that final pricing for North and Latin America will be announced in the near future. Customers can choose from several finishes, including Anthracite Black, Indigo Blue, and Canvas White, with both ear cushions and the headband being user-serviceable for added convenience.

As part of its ongoing commitment to innovation, Bowers & Wilkins also hinted at the upcoming launch of the flagship Px8 S2, which is expected to arrive before the end of the year. As always, Sound & Vision will reserve its final judgment until the Px7 S3 has been thoroughly tested under controlled conditions.
