'Greatest honour of my life': Angus closes up office

'It's probably going to take me a long time to actually process the incredible years I've had here — 21 years serving the people of Timmins-James Bay,' he says It's the end of a political era in the region. Late last night, Charlie Angus posted a farewell to Parliament video on YouTube, sharing footage of him closing down his office in Ottawa. "It's probably going to take me a long time to actually process the incredible years I've had here — 21 years serving the people of Timmins-James Bay. The greatest honour of my life," he says in the video. For the first time in over two decades, Angus' name isn't on the Timmins-area federal election ballot. It's a choice he made himself, announcing last year that he wasn't seeking another term as a Member of Parliament. He isn't quite committed to retirement, though. He said the fight and the resistance will go on. "It's just going to take form in a new way. But I'll be there, you'll see me, you know I've got your back. It's elbow's up time," he said. The video then shares clips of Angus through the years, from Ottawa to the Far North. It offers glimpses of Shannen's Dream, him playing music, enjoying a cold one, visiting area mines, with Jack Layton, and more. While he's not running, Angus has been crisscrossing the country recently on the Resistance Tour. He's also started a popular Substack that currently has over 57,000 subscribers. This election, the riding boundaries have been redrawn to create the new riding of Kapuskasing-Timmins-Mushkegowuk. Part of the new riding was represented by another NDP politician, Carol Hughes, who is also retiring from politics. Her office is also closed effective Friday, April. 25.
