Chiefs Re-sign Hollywood Brown in Hopes of a Healthier Season Ahead
The much-anticipated signing of Hollywood Brown to a one-year deal valued at up to $11 million for the 2024 season did not go as the Kansas City Chiefs had envisioned. Brown was initially heralded as the much-needed upgrade at the wide receiver position, a key area of focus for the Chiefs as they sought to enhance their offensive capabilities.
Unfortunately, Brown's debut season with the team was marred by injury. He suffered a sternoclavicular joint injury during the preseason, which required surgical intervention and ultimately sidelined him for 15 crucial games of the season. This setback limited his contributions significantly, as he only managed to participate in five games throughout the year, including three during the postseason. During these appearances, he recorded a modest total of 14 receptions for 141 yards, a performance that fell short of the expectations surrounding his arrival.
Despite these challenges, the Chiefs have decided to re-sign Brown to the same contract for the upcoming 2025 season. The organization's management remains optimistic that with improved health, Brown can deliver the results that were anticipated when he first joined the team. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed his belief in Brown's potential during a recent interview, emphasizing the difficulties of integrating players into a pivotal role late in the season. Mahomes stated, Its hard to throw guys in at the end of the season and try to give him a huge role. I was happy to have him back at the end of the season and for him to kind of get back in within the offense. He added that with a full offseason and training camp ahead, he hopes Brown can expand his role within the team's offensive strategy.
Last season, with both Brown and fellow receiver Rashee Rice sidelined for significant portions, rookie Xavier Worthy emerged as the team's leading receiver. Worthy recorded an impressive 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns, showcasing his talent and proving to be a reliable target for Mahomes. The Chiefs are now looking forward to a more dynamic and explosive offense in the upcoming season, especially with the anticipated return of Brown, Rice, and Worthy.
Mahomes expressed optimism about the team's potential this season, saying, Everything looks great right now getting the guys back and healthy. I think the offense has a chance to be really, really good. The core group will be back in its entirety, so the goal is to try to build on it and get even better and try to get back to some of the explosive passing plays that weve done in years past. With a strong focus on health and continuity, the Chiefs are eager to make a significant mark in the upcoming season, capitalizing on the talent available to them.
