Not all his appointments have been to progressives, and some have been discreet about their views, even as they have loyally obeyed the pope during his lifetime. Cardinals, like judges, do not always do what is expected of them. But if he has correctly selected for temperament, and feel for moral substance, and a sense that the church must work harder just to keep up with the modern world, the church may have a new Francis on its hands. It may not be privately welcomed by Australia's men in purple (rather than red.)
