Motorola has officially launched its 2025 Razr series, making its entrance months ahead of the previous year's model. While it may seem unusual to introduce the new series so earlyespecially when the 2024 Razr series just had a brief stint in the marketthere's palpable excitement at Motorola to kick off this year's offerings. This eagerness likely stems from their desire to build on the momentum generated by the Razr brand.

The 2025 Razr series signifies a notable shift in Motorola's approach, as the company has opted to release three distinct models this yearan increase from their standard two. At the forefront is the Razr Ultra 2025, which boasts specifications that would put many high-end Android smartphones to shame, albeit at a premium price point. Following suit are the Razr Plus 2025 and the Razr 2025, the latter affectionately nicknamed the Razr 'Minus' by some fans.

Having had the opportunity to get hands-on with all three models, including their innovative AI features and new accessories, I must admit that the Razr Ultra has left a remarkable impression on me. However, I do have some concerns that one crucial aspect of the Razr Ultra might overshadow its numerous strengths.

More Razr Variants for Every Preference

During my hands-on session, the Razr Ultra 2025 was my primary focus. This model expands upon the previous offerings in the Razr family, which consisted only of the standard Razr and the Razr Plus. Even though the Ultra is designed to be the premium version, both the Ultra and Plus share a strikingly similar aesthetic; their hardware appears nearly indistinguishable.

One of the standout features is the 4-inch cover screen, which the Ultra slightly enlarges by .1 inches due to its slimmer bezels. However, this minor increase is hardly noticeable in practical use. The primary differences lie in the color options and materials used, with the Ultra showcasing a new AI Key that activates the Moto AI featuremore on that shortly.

In a departure from its previous glass back panels, the Razr Ultra is available in several exciting color options and finishes. Notably, it offers an FSC-certified wood finish and a luxurious Alcantara fabric. This isn't Motorola's first foray into wood finishes, and it adds an appealing touch that makes the device feel both lightweight and sturdy in hand.

The Alcantara fabric, which is typically found in high-end products such as the Lucid Air and luxury bags, enhances the phones aesthetic appeal with its soft-to-the-touch texture and stylish stitching.

While the Razr Plus and standard Razr may not boast the same level of excitement in terms of design, they still present some attractive color choices. The Plus retains three colors from its predecessor, while the Razr 2025 presents brand-new hues, including an eye-catching green and a delightful pink.

Hardware Innovations and Specifications

Key hardware upgrades include a new titanium hinge, claimed to be four times stronger than previous models, providing greater durability and resistance to wear from folding. Although the hinge on the Razr Plus 2023 was somewhat flimsy, the Razr Plus 2024 showed notable improvements. My initial experience with the Razr Ultra 2025 indicates that while it feels robust, further testing will be needed for a more thorough evaluation.

Additionally, the Razr Ultra offers IP48 water and dust resistance, along with the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic on its cover screen for enhanced protection.

As for the internal specifications, they reflect Motorola's commitment to delivering a high-performance device. The Razr Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, making it the most powerful flip phone on the market currently. With 16GB of RAM, it even surpasses the capabilities of the flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra. The phone also features a state-of-the-art Pantone-validated Super HD display that is bright, responsive, and vibrantenhancing the overall user experience and minimizing the visibility of its fold crease.

The camera system on the Razr Ultra has also received significant upgrades, as it now features a 50MP dual-camera setup that includes a secondary ultra-wide sensor, enhancing versatility compared to last years limited telephoto option. For those interested in battery life, the Razr Ultra jumps to an impressive 4,700mAh capacity, equipped with 68W wired charging and 30W wireless charging. Given my positive experience with the battery life of the Razr Plus 2024, I'm eager to see how this model performs with the additional capacity.

Meanwhile, the Razr Plus seems to have undergone minimal changes, retaining its previous chip while only incorporating the new hinge and IP48 certification along with the improved display and camera features. The standard Razr 2025 model, however, does bring some updates, including a MediaTek Dimensity 7400X processor and a larger 4,500mAh battery.

AI Integration for Enhanced User Experience

Motorola is making a significant push into AI with the Razr series, aiming to catch up with its competitors. The Moto AI platform has been revamped to serve as a comprehensive AI hub, introducing features that could genuinely enhance user interaction. For instance, the Next Move feature was developed based on user feedback, addressing prior concerns about the clarity of Motorola's AI offerings. With Moto AI activated, users can receive suggestions tailored to the content displayed on their screenswhether it's saving a recipe, generating an image, or curating a playlist.

Another noteworthy addition is the Image Studio, which offers users a centralized location for creating images and wallpapers through AI tools, including the recently launched Sketch to Image feature.

Accessing Moto AI has been made easier with the introduction of the AI Key on the Razr Ultra. This dedicated button for AI functions is a refreshing change from the trend of integrating AI access into the power button, although I found the customization options for the key to be somewhat limited.

One particularly fascinating feature is Look and Talk, which allows the device to begin listening for commands when the user simply gazes at it while in a tented position. While I was unable to test this myselfsince it only recognizes one facethe demonstrations illustrated its functionality effectively. It's a feature I could see being well-utilized in future models, especially by those who appreciate hands-free operation.

Motorola is also collaborating with various AI partners to bolster the capabilities of Moto AI, including the likes of Metas Llama, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity, which is pre-installed and optimized for use with Moto AI. This collaboration could provide users with a range of AI models to choose from, enhancing the overall experience.

Accessories to Complement the Razr Series

In addition to the exciting phone releases, Motorola is also unveiling new accessories, including an intriguing pair of earbuds and a smartwatch. The new Moto Buds Loop offers a stylish design, enhanced by the use of Swarovski elements for those who appreciate a bit of bling. With Bose tuning, these open-ear earbuds promise to deliver impressive sound quality.

Meanwhile, the Moto Watch Fit resembles the Apple Watch closely, featuring a long-lasting battery life and extensive health monitoring capabilities. It's lightweight and durable but notably doesn't run on Wear OS, which has disappointed some fans who were hoping for a return to the Moto 360 series, especially in light of Motorola's recent successes.

Concerns Amidst Innovation

Given the substantial improvements seen in the Razr Plus 2024 compared to its predecessor, the advancements in the Razr Ultra should not come as a surprise. As the Razr brand solidifies its presence in the market, Motorola seems committed to delivering a premium experience by integrating top-tier hardware along with cutting-edge AI.

However, I do harbor some concerns regarding the $1,299 price tag attached to the Razr Ultra, as it may deter potential buyers. Additionally, the Razr Plus appears to lack sufficient updates to justify its cost. It will be interesting to see how the market reacts as the year unfolds; I sincerely hope that Motorola is not hindering its own success, as the Razr Ultra 2025 is undeniably a compelling device that deserves consumer interest and investment.
