Emme Darnold, a talented golfer representing Andrews High School, finds herself on the brink of an emotional milestone as she gears up for her last high school tournament. The UIL Girls Class 4A State Championships are set to take place on Monday and Tuesday at the picturesque Legends Golf Course in Kingsland, Texas. Darnold, who proudly wears the colors of the Lady Mustangs, is not overtly emotional about this significant moment, but she acknowledges that feelings may flood in once the competition concludes.

I think Im more excited than anything, Darnold shared, reflecting on her anticipation for the upcoming tournament. I think maybe when were done, the emotions will hit me. But I really have myself composed right now and just having fun. Her approach exemplifies her competitive spirit and determination as she aims for success.

This year, the Lady Mustangs are on the quest for not just one, but their third consecutive state title, which would mark the 20th overall championship for the team. Darnold's contribution has been significant in previous tournaments; last year at state, she secured a commendable tenth place individually with a score of 72-80152. Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs triumphed with a total score of 297-309606, finishing an impressive 43 strokes ahead of their closest rival, Seminole. The year prior, Darnold had also excelled, finishing fourth with a score of 74-78152.

The confidence within the Lady Mustangs is palpable, especially after their recent victory at the Region I-4A championships, where they dominated by an impressive 59 strokes. Im excited that this is my last (state tournament) and hopefully, itll be my best one, said Darnold. I cant wait to go play college golf, and Im just lucky that Ive gone four years to experience going to state. This enthusiasm highlights her commitment to the sport and her eagerness for the next chapter in her golfing career.

Darnold concluded the regional competition with an outstanding score of 74-76150. As the only senior on the Andrews girls golf team, she has not only showcased her individual skills but has also been a beacon of leadership for her teammates. Head coach Mark Burgen noted her significant impact on the teams performance this season. Shes been very solid and very stable and just a solid leader, Burgen said. When she goes out and sets the pace, shes going to come in with a very competitive score Shes a big leader for us.

Darnold's experience at the state tournament, as this marks her third consecutive year competing, adds an invaluable layer of confidence to the Lady Mustangs. Shes just experienced, Burgen remarked. We dont face a situation that catches her by surprise.

While Darnold is focused on her individual performance, she remains committed to achieving victory with her teammates as well. I want to win a state championship, not just by myself, but with the team also, she emphasized. Individually, I want to win and so thats really the goal that I have right now. The camaraderie and shared ambition within the Lady Mustangs echo their collective determination to bring home another coveted title.
