The North Wales seaside town with a secret beach tourists don’t know about One visitor described it as a 'hidden gem' where you can escape the crowds West Shore Beach, Llandudno, North Wales (Image: Jeff Buck/ geograph.org.uk ) As the weather grows warmer in the coming weeks many of us will be planning trips to the coast, especially since there's more bank holiday weekends looming around the corner. When it comes to a quintessential seaside day out, Llandudno in North Wales has been a go-to destination for generations of Mancunians. This Victorian seaside resort is brimming with charm thanks to its magnificent 19th-century pier, huge promenade, arcades, and the quaint cable cars which offer scenic views of the Great Orme. At the heart of it all is the vast North Shore beach. ‌ Thousands of visitors descend upon the town every year, yet many won’t be aware that Llanduno has a second beach which feels a world away from the main resort. It's a world away from the North Shore Beach (Image: Christopher Davies / North Wales Live ) You won’t find a pier, arcades and rides here. Instead it features a vast sandy beach backed by dunes, with gentle waves lapping at the shore. ‌ The beach is nestled beside the Great Orme and has breathtaking views of the Conwy Estuary and Anglesey in the distance. At low tide it's huge and sandy, in sharp contrast to the pebbles of the north shore. It’s popular for kite buggying, while the shallow waters are great for kite surfers. There’s a designated bathing area for swimmers, if you're feeling brave enough. Or simply roll up your trousers and have a cheeky paddle in the waves. ‌ The beach is lined with a long promenade, dotted with benches where you can sit down and spend a peaceful moment looking out to sea. Right by the shore is a children’s play area, so everyone’s happy. There’s just one cafe, the West Shore Beach Cafe, which overlooks the sea and has a range of light bites and sweet treats available, including delicious ice cream. ‌ One reviewer on Tripadvisor called the beach a ‘hidden gem’. They wrote: “Only 15 minutes walk from the promenade, but it feels like a world away.” Another said: “Llandudno's West shore and beach is much more relaxed and picturesque than the busier, more commercial North shore.” Perhaps the best thing about West Shore Beach is revealed as the day draws to a close: it’s the ideal spot for watching the sunset with the rich colours of the sky reflected in the smooth, calm water. It’s worth picking up some fish and chips, parking up by the beach and watching this beautiful display unfold. Article continues below A pay and display car park is located on Dale Road, LL30 2BG.
