He loved anything outdoors, but because it was a cold, November evening, he had to look inside for a hobby. A game of snooker was also something he was fond of. That night he'd potted some balls, and headed to a takeaway for some food. ‌ He was planning on taking his grub home, where he lived with his partner and their nine-year-old daughter. But Gavin would never make it there. His daughter, Lacey, has been left without a father. Article continues below He was killed by a speeding driver as he crossed the road, on Walmersley Road in Bury, and left for dead. Then, a bid to cover up the crime was launched. Almost three-and-a-half years since the tragedy, Gavin's family have seen justice done. In her heartbreaking testimony, Lacey said: "Now every time I see someone with a dad I get sad." Faizaan Haider, 25, who denied being behind the wheel of the BMW which killed Gavin on November 9, 2021, was jailed for nine years and three months after being convicted of causing Gavin's death by dangerous driving. He was driving at 57mph in a 30mph zone, and was under the influence of alcohol. ‌ Gavin Andrews (Image: Family handout ) His uncle, Suaiel Haider, 43, was sentenced to four years and three months after being convicted of perverting the course of justice, after he set fire to the BMW in a bid to destroy evidence and cover his nephew's tracks. But the plot failed and this weekend both men are behind bars. The eventual conclusion of the criminal case may provide some solace and comfort to Gavin's family, but they were left broken the minute they heard about his fate. Gavin's mum Isabelle Kane heard a knock on her door that night. ‌ “I have been heartbroken since that night, and my health has deteriorated," she said, in a statement read by prosecutors at the sentencing hearing. He had lots of hobbies, too many to mention. ‌ “Birthdays, Christmas and Mother's days, Gavin would always be the first person I would see. I am mentally and physically drained and don’t really know how I am still here. “My life will never be the same without my Gavin. To lose a child is indescribable.” Men jailed following a fatal collision in Bury ‌ Then came the task of informing Lacey that her daddy would not be coming home. Gavin's partner Karen Farnworth said of his relationship with his daughter: “The bond that they had was the most amazing thing to see and watch." Addressing Faizaan Haider in her statement read on her behalf, she continued: "You took that away from both of them. You took away the chance for Gavin to see his daughter finish high school, college and when she reaches adulthood. “She won’t be able to have her daddy walk her down the aisle. You have absolutely destroyed part of her life." ‌ Karen told of the emotional toll that Gavin's death has had on their daughter. She said: “I have had to deal with constant nightmares while she screams for her daddy. Now the only time she gets to talk to him is when we visit him at the cemetery. You are the one who destroyed a little girl’s life.” ‌ Gavin's sister Rebecca Andrews said: “The dangerous actions of Faizaan Haider have ruined my life. Not only have you taken Gavin away, you have also taken a part of me." She told how her brother's smile ‘lit up the room’. Rebecca said: “You could never be sad when Gavin was around. Gavin was the most amazing big brother. The scene on the crash on Walmersley Road in Bury ‌ “For three years and five months, my life has been ruined but also put on hold waiting for justice and closure. What I can only describe as a nightmare has become a reality." Describing her brother as 'caring, funny, witty and clever', Gavin's sister Stacey Andrews said: “Life will just simply never be the same. Faizaan Haider and Suaiel Haider will never know the pain and hurt they have caused. As a family it has left us doing a life sentence." While his father John Andrews described his son as his 'best friend, my life and my world'. ‌ Faizaan Haider, of Mosley Street, Bury, and Suaiel Haider, of Langdale Mews, Bury, were both sentenced on Friday (Apr 25) at Minshull Street Crown Court. After the hearing, Detective Sergeant Andrew Page, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Today is the conclusion of a three and a half year investigation and I hope this sentence can provide some more closure to the family of Gavin. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gavin’s family for their patience and dignity throughout this investigation. “These men have shown no remorse at any point since the fatal collision and today they have seen the consequences of their actions. They failed to stop at the scene and made efforts to destroy the car. Their cowardly efforts to destroy evidence and refusal to speak when questioned by officers in custody was unacceptable knowing the harm they had caused. At trial, both men attempted to blame another individual for their actions in a futile attempt to evade justice.
