St Kilda fans have ripped into coach Ross Lyon for the “mind-boggling” decision to sub young gun Hugo Garcia before half-time of Saturday’s clash against Brisbane. Brisbane extended their lead to 29 points 10 minutes into the second term, which prompted Lyon to pull the trigger on his substitute. Then subbed. Completely baffling,” another said. “Most confusing thing I’ve seen all year?” Another said. After a strong pre-season, Garcia was tipped to nail down a midfield position this year. He had 18 touches and a goal in the Round 1 loss to Adelaide before he was named the starting substitute in Round 2. The 19-year-old showed his talent with 23 touches and nine tackles against Richmond in Round 3 and was also won of the Saints’ better players in last week’s disastrous loss to the Western Bulldogs with a game-high 10 tackles. The decision to sub Garcia took on greater significance in the third quarter when forward Mason Wood was ruled out after suffering a head knock. That left the Saints down one on the bench as the Lions put the foot down to lead by 38 points at the final break. More to come ...
