He tried to gouge a man's eyes out over a single cigarette WARNING: Graphic images Andrew Kelley (Image: Merseyside Police ) A man who bit a shop assistant and assaulted another in a violent outburst has been jailed. Andrew Kelley, 48, lashed out at the shop assistants who were working at Target Food Stores on Park Lane in Netherton, after he was told he could not buy an individual cigarette as they were sold as a packet. Liverpool Crown Court heard on Friday, April 25, how Kelley, of Fulwood Drive in Aigburth, attempted to walk behind the counter of the shop to take a cigarette out of a packet on November 23 last year. The shop assistant challenged him and told him to leave the store. Kelley became aggressive and assaulted the victim, biting him close to his eye and pinning him to the floor, as well threatening him. Article continues below A second shop assistant was also assaulted before Kelley fled. Following a police search, Kelley was eventually arrested and later charged with Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent, Section 47 assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of threats to kill. One victim needed surgery and dental treatment for his injuries, and the second victim sustained minor injuries. Speaking to the ECHO two days after the incident on November 25, the owner of the store, Krishna Anan Tharajay, said he had heard screams as he sat upstairs above the shop. Krishna said he pulled the attacker off the employee before the attacker attempted to bite him on the neck. After pushing his face away from his neck, Krishna said he was then severely bitten on his arm, drawing blood. He told the ECHO at the time that the attacker then returned to attack his colleague, pinning him to the floor and biting his face above his left eyebrow. Krishna said: "He tried to go for my neck and then he bit my arm. He [the colleague] was screaming 'help me' while he was on top of him on the floor in the corner. "It was really scary, my colleague can't come back in because it's too much for him. There was blood everywhere, it was very very scary." Speaking about the case, Detective Constable Immy Mahmood, who led the investigation, said: “This was a vicious and shocking display of violence by Kelley, and today he has been punished in the courts and is now behind bars. “The incident quickly escalated from what was initially verbal exchange of words which then turned physical where Kelley has assaulted the victims several times in the face, tried to gouge out the victim’s eyes, then biting his face which has resulted in the victim requiring surgery. “The victim has been left with permanent scarring, cuts to his face and required dental treatment from the attack. He is unable to work and is afraid to leave his house as a result of this attack. “The second victim sustained minor injuries and said he now lives in fear of what may happen as a result of this incident.
