Pope Francis I's funeral is taking place this morning in front of millions of people, including Prince William and Donald Trump. Tens of thousands of people, including dozens of world leaders will attend in person and viewers around the world will be tuning in on television and live streams. We will keep you updated with the latest in our live blog below this article. Proceedings will officially begin at 10am local time (9am in the UK) and last for several hours, likely into the early afternoon, with the service taking place at St Peter's Basilica before a procession moves his body to St Mary Major, a basilica in central Rome Pope Francis visited often during his life. He has requested to be buried in a tomb inside the basilica which, while grand, is markedly smaller than the grottoes beneath St Peter's where 91 of his predecessors are buried, reports The Mirror. A papal election, known as a conclave, will soon take place to elect a new pontiff. In line with his wishes, Francis will be buried in a simple wooden coffin, abandoning the traditional triple-casket arrangement. More than 250,000 people have flocked to St Peter’s Basilica since Wednesday, with the Vatican keeping its doors open overnight to manage the surging crowds as a massive security presence watched on. On Friday, an emergency alert was sent out to phones in Rome and the Vatican to inform visitors that access to the church would end at 5pm local time (6pm in the UK). The Pope's coffin was then sealed in a special ceremony led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Around 50 heads of state and 10 monarchs, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are expected at Saturday’s outdoor ceremony in St Peter’s Square.
