Residents warned to prepare for heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system approaches Heavy downpours could be in store for the Sault and communities to our north as Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Monday and Tuesday. The national weather agency says heavy rain is possible Monday night into Tuesday morning with local rainfall amounts of up to 50 mm. The statement applies to Sault Ste. Marie, Superior East, Wawa, White River and Pukaskwa. "A low pressure system will bring showers and a risk of thunderstorms to the area Monday night," Environment Canada said in a release. "Areas affected by thunderstorms could receive significant rainfall amounts. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall." Rainfall warnings may be issued as this system approaches, the weather agency said. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, Environment Canada said, noting heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood outlook statement warning residents about the potential for localized flooding due to rising temperatures and significant rainfall over the coming days. The Ministry of Natural Resources also issued a flood warning for the Sault Ste. Marie / Blind River district. Residents of the Goulais River area were already dealing with localized flooding on Sunday as the river burst its banks. Information on floods is available from the conservation authority or at Ontario.ca/floods.
