Needing just a point to clinch the championship, the Reds ended up putting on a show to seal the Premier League in style. Thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 as they came from behind, celebrations started long before the final whistle. With fans creating a sea of red, and as club songs rang out as the sky filled with pyro just to greet the team coach, Arne Slot later admitted that was the moment he knew there was no chance his side would lose and Liverpool would be left celebrating long into the night. Slot shared hugs and handshakes with his coaching staff in the final minute of stoppage-time ahead of the final whistle before Anfield truly erupted. It has been a long 35 years but this was certainly worth the wait. Taken for granted three decades ago, since then Kopites have been starved. When ending the club's 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England again in 2020, it would have previously been unthinkable that such a triumph would have to be celebrated behind closed doors due to a health pandemic. It has been so long since Liverpool last won the league in front of their supporters, there was almost an awkwardness around how to mark the actual occasion. This was a step into the unknown, after all. With the Reds having to wait until May 25, after facing Crystal Palace on the last day of the season, to hold aloft the Premier League trophy, this was an occasion where no-one really knew what to expect. This Liverpool squad have celebrated many a trophy with their fans in recent years. But celebrating without silverware when winning a prize was something a little new. The Reds player were perhaps equally uncertain as they giddily celebrated, initially splitting in two, jumping up and down in their own groups after the substitutes and squad wildly springing onto the pitch, with some heading towards the Anfield Road end, before belatedly congregating in front of the Kop. There, Ryan Gravenberch held aloft a cardboard cut out of the trophy at least! A boyhood Reds supporter, Harvey Elliott was every fan out on the pitch as he took in every moment. Sprinting towards the Kop as he swung a corner flag around, he later booted balls into the stand before waving a scarf around above his head. In scenes then reminiscent of the aftermath of their 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, the Liverpool squad then then joined their supporters in a rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in front of the Kop. Having contributed to the Reds being ‘knocked off their perch’ by United, it has taken no time at all for Liverpool to reclaim their status with their bitter-rivals stuck in the doldrums following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. The squad then embarked on a lap of honour, only to be interrupted by Slot breaking one of his first promises after taking over at Liverpool. Having previously insisted he would not replicate predecessor Jurgen Klopp’s trademark celebratory fistpumps, Slot and his coaching staff this time made an exception. Taking to the centre circle to jump in a huddle following their lap, the squad then returned to the Kop, sprinting towards the Reds’ famous stand before leaping into the air as supporters then started to individually pay tribute to their title-winning heroes. Mohamed Salah was the first to be serenaded, followed by Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk. But before the Kop could continue, despite initial calls for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Slot took the mic. Unofficially announced by Klopp as his successor 11 months ago when the German repurposed one of his own chants for the Dutchman, in a touching moment, Slot then repaid the favour - only to find himself quickly drenched by his squad. Salah then gathered his team-mates in front of the Kop to take an entire squad selfie, continuing his season-long trend, before the supporters’ individual tributes to players continued. Alexander-Arnold was the first to take the acclaim, pushed forward by Curtis Jones as the Kop burst into a rendition of ‘the Scouser in our team’. The Liverpool vice-captain was understandably reluctant at first, given the furore regarding his future, before he started pounding the badge on his chest. Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Ryan Gravenberch, Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Ibrahima Konate, Jones and Conor Bradley all followed along with the most reluctant Joe Gomez, who was pushed forward by no less than four of his team-mates to take in their acclaim. Slot then led his players to pay further tribute to supporters elsewhere in the stadium, before the Liverpool squad departed. Most fittingly, their exit came accompanied by a sound-track of ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ by the Courteeners. While Slot would be serenaded again by the few fans left standing inside the ground when finally concluding his pitch-side media duties, by this point the celebrations had been taken outside. The sea of red that awaited Liverpool upon their arrival was now gathered by the Bill Shankly statue, longing their day to remember would never end. Further celebrations are to come, of course, with guards of honour then the Reds’ official crowning on May 25. It was unthinkable that Liverpool would be Premier League champions in 2025 when Klopp took the mic to announce Slot’s appointment 11 months ago. It had been 35 years in the making but was one for the ages on a day that Reds supporters will never forget. But with Slot already eyeing future honours next season, having made a point of insisting it is two titles in five years - not 35 - when addressing supporters, the Liverpool head coach will now be looking to ensure such scenes become much more frequent events.
