Laurence, Lydia, Emilia, Lydia, Freddie, and Jack Fox can join the likes of Hailey Bieber, Anaïs Gallagher, Lily Collins, and, in the words of Cruz Beckham, Jesus, in being a beneficiary of nepotism. What makes the Fox family different is that they really do share a talent for being behind the camera. With countless accolades and credits between them, it is possible that their dynasty really might be one of showbiz’s most established family trees. Granted, some have dabbled in politics, others in production, and one in radio but, ultimately, the family is stitched together with one thespian thread. So, who is who and what do they do? • Read more: Who is Laurence Fox? The tale begins in 1913 with Robin Fox, who was born in Westminster, London. Even he was technically a nepo baby. His mother was the sister of stage actress Lily Hanbury. Hanbury’s first cousins were all actors in Victorian theatre, including the famous Ellen Terry. Known as an infamous philanderer, Robin was not an actor, but he was a theatrical agent and the chairman of the English Stage Company. Edward is the eldest of Robin Fox’s three sons and arguably boasts some of the Fox family’s biggest accolades. He has won Baftas for his roles in The Go-Between (1972), A Bridge Too Far (1978), and Edward & Mrs Simpson (1979). He has also taken on the role of M in Never Say Never Again (1983), starring alongside the first James Bond, Sean Connery. Edward has also starred alongside his son, Freddie Fox in an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband in 2018. In 2003, Edward was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to drama. Romantically, Edward has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress Tracy Reed and together they have one daughter, Lucy Arabella. In 1971, he began a relationship with Joanna David, with whom he has two children, Emilia and Freddie. The pair were together for more than three decades before they tied the knot in 2004. Politically, Edward has been known as a patron of the Ukip party and advocated for Brexit ahead of the referendum to leave the EU. Another of Robin’s sons, James Fox is now the head of the Fox dynasty, having a long and rich career in both television and film. His career began in the 1960s with starring roles in The Servant (1963) and Performance (1970). These days, he is probably best recognised for his roles as Mr Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), A Passage to India (1984), and as Sir Thomas Rotheram in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009). He's also been in Downton Abbey, playing the rather irritable Baron Aysgarth, and has starred alongside his son Laurence in an episode of the third series of Lewis (2009). He has only ever been romantically associated with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Piper, with whom he shares five children. Sadly, Piper passed away in April 2020. Robert is the third son of Robin Fox, which makes him one of James’s brothers. For more than two decades, Robert has been a critically acclaimed theatrical producer in the West End and on Broadway. From working on Skylight with Michael Gambon, to The Breath of Life with Maggie Smith, and Amy’s View with Judi Dench, it’s fair to say Robert’s credits are enviable. Away from the stage, his credits extend to film production, too, having been the executive producer of Closer, Iris, and The Hours. The latter two garnered Oscars in 2003. He also produced The Crown and Atonement. Robert’s first marriage was to Celestia Sporborg, with whom he had three children between 1975 and 1990. He was then married to the late actress, Natasha Richardson, until 1992. Since 1996, Robert has been married to Fiona Golfar, with whom he shares two children. Wife of Edward, but more importantly, a woman with her own successes. Joanna has credits in BBC adaptations of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (1971), War and Peace (1972), and Rebecca (1979), among other roles and appearances in both film and television. Emilia is Edward and Joanna’s eldest child and followed in their footsteps with her own laundry list of credits. Her television roles include starring in the BBC’s Merlin, as well as appearing in Pride and Prejudice, Gunpowder, and the 2005 BBC miniseries The Virgin Queen. She has also starred as Dr Nikki Alexander on the BBC crime drama Silent Witness, having joined in 2004, making her the longest-serving cast member. The Oxford-alumna was engaged to comedian Vic Reeves and romantically linked to British art designer Toby Mott. She married British actor and son of Richard Harris, Jared Harris, in 2005. The couple announced their separation three years later and divorced in 2009. Since then, she began a relationship with fellow actor Jeremy Gilley with whom she shares one child. They split up in 2011. Emilia has also had romantic relationships with chef Marco Pierre White and Luc Chaudhary. Currently, she is said to be dating TV producer Jonathan Stadlen. The younger brother of Emilia and second child of Joanna and Edward, Freddie’s screen performances include roles as Marilyn in the BBC’s Boy George biopic Worried About the Boy (2010) and as Freddie Baxter in TV series Cucumber (2015). He’s also taken to the stage, starring as Simon Bliss in Hay Fever (2012) at the Noel Coward Theatre, as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet at the Sheffield Crucible, and as Lord Goring in An Ideal Husband (2018) at the Vaudeville Theatre. A jack of all trades, Freddie has also been a director of the short film Hero (2018), and worked as a radio and voice actor. Most recently, Freddie has been cast as the villain in the fifteenth season of Doctor Who. When starring in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Freddie began dating his co-star, Tamzin Merchant, for two years until 2013. He has since been linked to Sex Education star Tanya Reynolds. In 2015, Freddie said he hopes to fall in love with another person, as opposed to a gender. Laurence, the son of James Fox and his wife Mary, has starred in films such as The Hole (2001), Robert Altman’s Gosford Park (2001), The Last Drop (2005), and Colditz (2005). He’s also starred in the ITV detective drama Lewis and portrayed Prince Charles in Whatever Love Means (2005). He met his ex-wife Billie Piper when they starred in Treats by Christopher Hampton. The pair were married in 2007 and share two sons. They divorced in 2016. He has been engaged to Elizabeth Barker since summer last year. Acting aside, Laurence has taken an interest in politics, having founded the Reclaim Party in 2020. The party has been described as a right-wing populist party. However, Laurence has had limited success as a politician, and only received 0.56 per cent of the vote in the 2024 London Assembly election. Daughter of James and Mary and sister to Jack and Laurence, Lydia Fox has found fame as a producer and actress. She has appeared in a Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2007), Submarine (2010), The Souvenir (2019), and Holby City. Lydia also produced The Double (2013). Since 2013, she has been married to comedian Richard Ayoade, with whom she has three children. The fourth son of James Fox and Mary, Jack is the younger brother of Laurence. He is probably best known for his role in Fresh Meat (2011), but has enjoyed success in the Golden Globe-nominated series Genius, BBC One’s Privates, Midsomer Murders, and, most notably, for his lead role in Riviera (2019). He has most recently starred in the BBC One drama Cheaters (2024). In terms of film, Jack has appeared in Blood Moon, Kids in Love, and Johnny English, as well as the Oscar-nominated Theeb (2014). He’s also had a spell in the West End, starring opposite his father in Dear Lupin at the Apollo Theatre. Since 2022, Jack has been married to songwriter Eleanor Fletcher. The couple have a daughter together, named Scarlett Mary Hazel Fox. Previously, it was rumoured that he had a fling with Lily James. And that is a rundown of every Fox in the den.
