Initially, a Patrol Services Unit made up of a sargant and four constables will begun working out of the facility The first phase of operations at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service's new Division 2 location downtown has begun. A newly established Patrol Services Unit, which is made up of four constables and a sergeant, will begin working out of 180 Brock St. today. The officers duties will include bicycle patrol, beat patrol, targeted patrol, community engagement, crime prevention, and addressing other issues impacting the downtown area. “This has been a long time coming, and we’re proud to see it finally taking shape,” said Interim Chief Brent Duguay. “Launching Division 2 is a significant step forward in enhancing our police presence downtown and strengthening relationships with the people who live, work, and visit here. We’re excited to get started and continue building a safer, more connected community.” With the launch, the public can expect a police presence at local events and throughout the area during the summer months. “We’re here to be a real part of the downtown community,” said Sergeant Derek MacFarlane. “That means checking in with businesses, walking the beat, and dealing with the tough stuff too—like helping people in crisis, or stepping in when public spaces aren’t being used safely. If you see us around, say hello. We’re here to enhance trust, keep people safe, and look out for everyone downtown.” Members from Traffic Services, the Canine Unit, and the Central Support Bureau—including a Sergeant, Community Safety Officer and the High School Liaison Officer will be working out of 180 Brock alongside the Division 2 members. A Staff Sergeant will be assigned to supervise all members working out of Division 2. Partner agencies including the Collision Reporting Centre, Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District and Victim Services of Algoma will be brought into the Division 2 location in an effort to enhance service delivery and contribute to improved safety and well-being in the downtown core. On Sunday, SooToday reported the Sault Police Service is looking for a tax break on the new building, which will be discussed at Tuesday's council meeting. Although officers have started working out of the Division 2 building, it is not yet open to the public. Police say in the meantime, if police services are needed, visit the Police Services Building on Second Line East or call 705-949-6300. Some incident types like lost property, mischief, sexual assault, and theft can also be reported online.
