Paul Scholes sends warning about transfer interest in Manchester United target Matheus Cunha

Paul Scholes sends warning about transfer interest in Manchester United target Matheus Cunha Matheus Cunha is a target for Man Utd this summer but Paul Scholes has some doubts about the potential signing. United have suffered 15 defeats in the top flight this season and they are guaranteed to record their lowest ever points total in the Premier League after months of relentlessly bad results. Ruben Amorim was appointed in November and has not turned the team around, although United are still in the hunt for the Europa League, which could salvage a miserable campaign. United will back Amorim in the summer transfer window and sign players who are tailor-made for his system. Matheus Cunha is the prime target for United, and he is understood to be hopeful of moving to Old Trafford after scoring 17 goals in all competitions in a poor Wolves side. While Scholes agrees the "athletic" Cunha would be a good addition for Amorim this summer, he warned any new signing will struggle to make an impact if they join this United side. "He looks like he’s got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants," Scholes wrote in his TNT Sports column. I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. "The quality of play right now is so poor. And with Cunha, is he a centre-forward or is he a wide player? There’s no doubt that he has quality and of course, it would be nice to sign him. "But I worry about where he fits in. You can sign the best three players in the world, and I think they’ll struggle coming into this team at the minute, but they’ve got to start somewhere." United refused to break the £60million barrier for any of their five summer signings last year, but they would likely attempt to stagger the £62.5m payment for Cunha in instalments. United coach Ruben Amorim billed Cunha as "real quality" on the eve of their 1-0 defeat to Wolves. "He [Wolves coach Vitor Pereira] is playing a 3-4-3, he's doing quite well! He's changing some players, he has real quality players - Cunha and all these guys, they have real quality." When pressed on Cunha and possible interest from United, Amorim replied: "I just gave the example because I remembered about Matheus. He's scoring a lot of goals. Just that." Amorim was recently asked about Cunha again and he added: "I could say this is a conversation for the end of the season but I have an idea that is clear because we need to do things early. "I will not say anything about Matheus because if I say one time I will have to comment on every situation. I am focused on this season and even in the next few games could change our plan for next season." --- Here at the Manchester Evening News, we’re dedicated to bringing you the best Manchester United coverage and analysis.
